    General Job Description

    Instructs and supervises personnel in the performance of cleaning and general maintenance. Trains, instructs, and schedules personnel in performing their duties. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Custodial Supervisor and the Manager of Custodial Services. Must be responsible and dependable.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Responsible for the general security of the building assigned.

    2. Plans and schedules work for employees.

    3. Trains, instructs, supervises, and assists personnel in performing their duties.

    4. Checks inventory, orders, and makes recommendations on custodial supplies.

    5. Makes recommendations on building repairs and on custodial staff.

    6. Checks and locks all doors when leaving the building at the end of the shift.

    7. Some custodial positions may require operation of university vehicle.

    Non-Essential Job Functions

    1. May sweep, mop, scrub, strip and polish floors and stairs.

    2. May vacuum, clean rugs and carpets.

    3. May dust and/or clean furniture.

    4. May carry out and dispose of trash.

    5. May clean trash cans.

    6. May clean restroom fixtures, walls and floors, windows and glass doors.

    7. May clean blackboards and water fountains.

    8. May operate a blower to clear sidewalks.

    9. May change light bulbs.

    10. Serves as back up to other departmental staff when assigned.

    11. Performs other related duties as assigned

     

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

     

    1. Knowledge of custodial materials and techniques.

    2. Ability to supervise employees effectively in the performance of their assigned duties.

    3. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

    4. Working knowledge of various types of custodial machines and aids, including but not limited to vacuums, buffers, and carpet cleaning machines.

    5. Knowledge and understanding of techniques of cleaning, waxing, etc., utilized in the maintenance of floors, wall surfaces, bathrooms, and other specific areas in classroom, office, and residence hall buildings on the university campus.

    6. Some custodial positions may require operating a university vehicle and if so, it will be necessary for employee to possess a valid Texas driver’s license and qualify for university driver certification.

     

    Physical Demands

     

    Ability to work long hours while standing and to withstand the physical strain of cleaning work.

    Required Education

    Must have attained an educational level sufficient to read, write, and perform simple calculations.

    Required Experience and Training

    Three years of experience in building custodial services is required. Experience in the selection of custodial supplies and supervision of personnel is required.

    Specific Job Requirements/Duties for this Posting

    This position is located in the Baker Pattillo Student Center. Duties include occasionally assisting in the room setup for events.

    This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
