The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) (https://avalanche.state.co.us/about-us) is a program within the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, Executive Director’s Office. The program is a partnership between the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Department of Transportation (CDOT), and the Friends of the CAIC (FoCAIC) a 501c3 group. The mission of the CAIC is to provide avalanche information, education and promote research for the protection of life, property and the enhancement of the state’s economy. The CAIC promotes avalanche safety by reducing the impact of avalanches on recreation, industry and transportation in the State through a program of forecasting and education.
Description of Job

This position exists to support information and data systems at the Avalanche Information Center. This work includes three main functions:
+ Support the CAIC data systems: Monitor CAIC database systems including MySQL and PostgreSQL platforms. Support forecast staff with data entry, quality control, and data requests. Use geographic information systems (GIS) to review, analyze, and visualize geospatial data. Compile data requests from the public and outside groups to be reviewed by senior staff. Work with CAIC staff to manage and support operational, archive, and metadata assets.
+ Support the CAIC’s web and mobile applications: Work with CAIC staff to support quality assurance (QA) testing of internal and external systems. Maintain an understanding of these systems to facilitate function testing of specific portions of web and mobile platforms. Support CAIC staff that are participating in QA processes. Support administrative staff as they draft work plans and contracting documents. Support third-party contractors who are building new components to existing applications. Work with CAIC technical group to support industry partners, academic groups that support avalanche safety in Colorado.
+ Small project development: Work with technology and forecast staff to refine needs and develop project plans. Use GIS tools and other-off- the shelf platforms to support CAIC operations and research programs.
Support the CAIC’s computer and data systems:
+ Support CAIC Program Assistant to manage the group’s office and field computing equipment.
+ Support CAIC technical staff to manage and support operational and archive data systems.
+ Use Structured Query Language platforms to review data entries and draft data requests.
+ Use GIS tools to answer data questions and create data visualizations.
Support the CAIC’s web and mobile applications :
+ With direction, oversee quality assurance testing of new or modified web and mobile applications.
+ Serve as point of contact for forecast staff participating in QA efforts.
+ Answer questions about function and specifications from testing protocol documents. Relay other issues to senior staff.
+ Understand specifications and functions well enough to facilitate QA testing.
+ Serve as point of contact for CAIC staff on web and mobile platform functions.
+ This position works with senior staff and contractors as they design, build, and install new components.
+ They work with CAIC technical group to support work with industry partners, academic groups, and contractors to design and implement technical solutions to support avalanche safety in Colorado.
+ Conduct or oversee small development efforts to get new components to work with existing systems.
Technology Development :
+ Work with technology and forecast staff and senior staff to develop ideas and needs that drive development with contractors.
+ Work with administrative staff to maintain current information in Open Projects. Use off-the-shelf platforms to investigate, analyze, and visualize CAIC data.
Other Duties Assigned:Oversee and complete small projects for the CAIC.
