    UPMC Hamot is hiring a Professional Staff Nurse to join 7 South Oncology!

     

    **Medical/Oncology Acute Care Unit (7 South)** **:** a 46-bed acute medical-oncology unit for adults and geriatric patients with various medical illnesses. It provides chemotherapy and care for inpatients, outpatients, and observation patients. Services include blood transfusions, IV hydration, heparin drips, CBI, PCA pumps for pain control, and more. The unit has 12 step-down beds for higher acuity patients.

The final job title and rate of pay will be based upon both individual qualifications and candidate choice. The minimum rate of pay for a non-BSN Professional Staff Nurse is $33.75.

    **Purpose:** The Professional Staff Nurse plays a crucial role in the healthcare team, setting standards for care quality and taking responsibility for nursing care. They manage patient care for groups of patients and their families, using independent judgment and collaborating with team members. This role involves leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision, ensuring effective relationships with physicians, other healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes. Additionally, they show a strong commitment to both the community and the nursing profession.

    Responsibilities:

    + Develops and maintains productive relationships, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues.

    + Understands cultural differences, holds peers accountable for healthy relationships, and balances work and personal life.

    + Models safe work hours, time management, and a healthy lifestyle, and communicates safety hazards.

    + Applies adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff, providing detailed guidance for care transitions.

    + Supports the development of students and colleagues, may serve as a preceptor, and fosters an environment of open dialogue and continuous development.

    + Uses the nursing process within Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment, formulates daily goals and care plans with patients, and demonstrates critical thinking in identifying various patient issues.

    + Practices solid communication skills, ensures comprehensive documentation, and incorporates professional and health system goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.

    + Builds healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, and demonstrates accountability for professional development.

    + Actively participates in shared governance, goal setting, and quality improvement efforts, adapting to change and supporting the transition process.

    + Engages fully with the care team, participates in work to improve patient care and the practice environment, and identifies and communicates quality improvement opportunities.

    + Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support clinical care improvements and influences patients' plans of care.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    + Zero to two years of experience; BSN preferred.

    + Demonstrates knowledge and skills for age-appropriate care and interaction.

    + Understands principles of growth and development over the life span.

    + Assesses patient data to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.

    + Establishes and maintains positive, caring relationships with various stakeholders.

    + Works productively and effectively in a complex environment with changing priorities and specialized equipment.

    + Exhibits good clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

    + Demonstrates critical thinking in applying the nursing process and leading others.

    + Possesses mobility, visual manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

    + UPMC offers flexible shift options, including night and weekend shifts with premium pay, requiring at least 6 months of nursing experience and possible orientation during regular business hours. Interested candidates should inform their recruiter during the interview process.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

    + Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within 1 year of hire/transfer.

    + Act 34

    + UPMC approved national certification preferred.

    + Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

    + NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) is required within 6 months of hire/transfer.

    + Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP) graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within SIX MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.

    *Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
