    Position Description:

The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine seeks an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Basic and Translational Sciences. This full-time tenured faculty position is at the Associate or Full Professor level. The Chair will lead a department committed to advancing foundational science and translating discoveries into clinical applications. The successful candidate will foster a collaborative environment that supports research, education, and professional growth while driving the department’s strategic initiatives.

The Department of Basic and Translational Sciences brings together the School’s basic and translational science faculty. Spanning common research between lab groups, interdisciplinary collaboration creates a synergy to leverage the collective potential of faculty to promote advances in basic and translational research. The chair is responsible for developing programs that support the School's priorities based on our Mission and Vision statements. This role includes the overall administration and leadership of all aspects of the academic departmental programs, research, teaching and mentorship. It involves strategic planning and goal setting, financial management, faculty recruitment and development, oversight of graduate and DMD educational programs, research, interactions with other departments and supporting the service missions of both the school and the university. The Chair will work with the Vice Dean for Research and Scholarship to promote research at PDM and to enhance the School’s academic reputation at the University, within the dental research community, and with the research community at large. The department supports a wide range of research interests and does not require a direct oral health research focus. However, the role includes contributing to the teaching mission and overseeing both graduate and DMD educational programs administered by the department.

    • Internationally recognized contribution to clinical and/or basic science research

    • Extramural funding

    + Skills and Competencies:

+ Ability to articulate a compelling vision for basic and translational research.

+ Strong commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive environment as well as interdisciplinary teaching and mentoring.

+ Demonstrated ability to manage large programs, budgets, and personnel.
