Job Description:
The Student Success Specialist provides student support and programming functions associated with retention, student success, and advising through the Academic Success Center. This position would be responsible for direct, proactive student services that combine academic, noncognitive, and career planning support, as well as early intervention and academic seminar delivery to multiple student populations known to be academically at-risk and to be facing equity gaps in retention and graduation rates. In addition, this position provides supplemental advising regarding academic policies and general education requirements. The Student Success Specialist also assists with onboarding and transition support services for students, with sensitivity around issues that affect diverse cultural and socioeconomic populations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibility 1: Academic Support and Advising
+ Provide accessible, inclusive, and evidence-based support for students through holistic student success coaching related to academic, career, and personal success
+ Manage, respond to, and seek resolution for student academic support referrals and other updates through the Advising and Early Alert System
+ Conduct academic interventions with students at risk for attrition, including students experiencing academic and personal difficulty
+ Collaborate and communicate with a wide range of university partners on sensitive issues to resolve student concerns and issues of academic policy/procedure and effectively refer students for support
+ Assist students in developing an academic and career plan related to establishing goals, identifying potential obstacles, and persisting through challenges
+ Serve as a Liberal Arts & Science Curriculum (LASC) and academic policy expert and provide supplemental advising for any undergraduate student seeking assistance
+ Develop and maintain resources (literature, websites, and training sessions) related to academic coaching and advising
+ Develop curriculum, teach, and assess academic success or similar courses on an as needed basis
+ Participate in regular meetings and ongoing training with Academic Success Center staff, as well as Career Development Center staff and other academic coaching and advising staff
Percentage of Time: 70%
Responsibility 2: Retention Outreach & Programming
+ Coordinate and carry out outreach campaigns in support of university onboarding, student success, and retention
+ Develop and carry out targeted outreach and programming to various student populations to support and engage their transition into the MSUM community, with sensitivity around issues that affect diverse cultural and socioeconomic student populations
Percentage of Time: 20%
Responsibility 3: Support Academic Success Center Initiatives
+ Participate in Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) events
+ Represent the Academic Success Center at campus events, including Admissions events, resource fairs, and new student orientation
+ Support hiring, supervision, training, and resource development for student employees
+ Contribute to planning and implementation of ASC initiatives
+ Present workshops and seminars as needed
+ Work effectively in a team environment

+ Be respectful of and sensitive to the rights, responsibilities, and duties of others, and respectful of the human rights of all racial, ethnic, and religious groups, including but not limited to protected groups as defined by state statute.
+ Maintain professional level of conduct and interaction with other staff so that staff dissention is minimized.
+ Maintain control and composure during difficult and stressful situations to instill a calming effect on others.
+ Maintain a professional distance in relationships with students and their families.

Minimum Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s Degree plus one academic year work experience. Or two years of professional experience or a combination of post-secondary training, education and/or professional experience. Experience can take the form of practicum, internships, or similar experience.
+ Strong oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a variety of constituents
+ Work effectively in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Master’s Degree
+ Experience supporting students who have been historically underrepresented in higher education
+ Experience in college-level academic or career coaching, tutoring, academic advising, or other student services
Other Requirements:
+ Physical Effort: Must be able to lift/ carry equipment and materials occasionally.
