Position Description
The Sanitation Supervisor- Waste serves as the primary working foreman and route supervisor of the work crews while engaging in collecting and disposing of Residential refuse and recycling. The Sanitation Supervisor will also work crew assignments, conduct roll calls, provide information to employees, schedule employee time off, and supervise the daily collection process. The position is also considered as a primary back-up for absences of the Residential Collections Superintendent. Work is performed with some degree of independence and may be required to fill in for drivers or other staff in emergencies or staff shortages. Work occurs in all weather conditions and includes working holidays and possibly working overtime. Work is supervised by the Residential Collections Superintendent and is evaluated based on attainment of individual performance objectives, completion of routes without complaints, employees meeting work schedules, and direct observation.

Waste Services is responsible for weekly curbside waste and every other week curbside recycling collection for over 151,000 customers in the urban services district as well as collection of over 200 public litter baskets in the downtown Nashville corridor. The division also operates four convenience centers where residents of Davidson County can bring waste, recycling, bulk items, food waste, household hazardous waste, and other items for recycling or disposal and eight recycling drop-off locations available to residents who do not qualify for curbside recycling collection.
Waste Services currently employs staff members working in collection, administration, customer service, education, landfill engineering, development review, and outreach.
Typical Duties
+ Plans, organizes, and supervises the work of solid waste workers and equipment operators; holds pre-shift briefings and assigns collection routes; calls in other personnel if needed; visually inspects equipment to ensure operational readiness; ensures refuse is collected.
+ Maintains time sheets of employees; records leave, time worked, and absences without pay.
+ Ensures personnel are trained and follow prescribed OSHA safety rules and regulations; prepares reports on operations, accidents, activities, and other reports as needed.
+ Establishes necessary records and files consistent with divisional management.
+ Inspects sanitation equipment to ensure they are properly cleaned, services, and parked after routes are completed.
+ Reviews applications, interviews qualified candidates, and recommends personnel to fill divisional vacancies; makes recommendations to management on employee promotions, pay increases, transfers, and discipline.
+ Visits facilities and routes and inspects work of residential and recycling crews.
+ Responds to complaints of questions from residential and commercial customers to answer questions or resolve complaints.
+ May operate sanitation and other equipment; fills in for other employees for absences or additional service calls.
+ Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of experience in waste management, logistics, transportation, or similar industry experience.

LICENSES REQUIRED:
Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
+ Must be able to operate Metro equipment and vehicles in a safe, prudent and responsible manner.
+ Physical demands include walking, standing, climbing, lifting.
+ Must have the strength and agility to allow the employee to perform job duties which would be found at the level of medium work (i.e. exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force)
+ Working conditions include performing job duties indoors and outdoors with extreme temperatures, wet and humid surroundings, sufficient noise, fumes, odors, and dust.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
