    Position Description

    This is an entry-level position in the Roads Division of the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT). Employee works as a member of a maintenance or construction crew performing a wide variety of laboring and semi-skilled duties associated with the maintenance, construction, repair, cleaning and upkeep of county streets, roads and public rights-of-way.

    Work schedules may be morning, afternoon or evening shifts and could also consist of weekends and holidays.

     

    *In addition to vacancies, with NDOT, this list may be used to fill other Maintenance & Repair Worker positions in throughout Metro Nashville Government.*

    The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.

    Typical Duties

    + Performs unskilled laboring functions associated with the repair and upkeep of county streets and roads.

    + Cleans, sweeps, flushes and removes debris from streets and rights-of-way.

    + Assists in repairing roads, bridges, sidewalks and related structures.

    + May operate chain saws, weed eaters or perform other potentially dangerous functions requiring skill and dexterity.

    + May operate mowers, tow-motors, jackhammers and other similar equipment.

    + May operate equipment that sprays chemicals to prevent vegetation growth.

    + May operate small trucks, vans and other vehicles.

    + Cleans and maintains tools and equipment.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Eighth Grade Education and experience in construction, laboring, maintenance or a related field.

    LICENSE REQUIRED:

    Valid Driver License

    Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

     

    Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    + Class "B" or Higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

     

    Some positions at the N ashville Department of Transportation (NDOT) require employees appointed to this classification to obtain a CDL prior to the end of their six (6) month probationary period. Failure to obtain the CDL within the six (6) month probationary period may result in automatic termination/dismissal.
