Job Information
Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This is a non-represented position (no union affiliation) and is subject to the provisions of the Personnel Rules of the Municipality of Anchorage.
DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Water & Wastewater Utility
HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Starting pay does not exceed the midpoint of the displayed pay range.

Example of Duties
Under the general direction of the AWWU Occupational Health & Safety Manager, enforces the department's safety and security programs for the Utility. Inspects facilities and divisions, including equipment and working conditions, for compliance with various safety codes. Drafts division safety and security programs with division supervisors and AWWU's Safety Manager. Working with AWWU's Training Specialist, organizes and conducts seminars, lectures and training sessions on first aid and safety. Provides expertise regarding safety codes, rules and practices. Provides in-depth guidance on Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) general industry safety standards, Industrial Hygiene (IH), and Fire Code provisions. Oversees contracted security performance at AWWU headquarters, including the duties of the security guard, for contract specification compliance. Manages and schedules Industrial Hygiene contracted services. Coordinates AWWU's Respiratory Fit testing. Writes reports on the status of AWWU's Industrial Hygiene program, Respiratory Fit program, and fire safety programs, with substantive recommendations to improve them. Coordinates Utility fire drills and reporting. Analyzes data on accident rates and compensation claims, to develop methods to reduce costs and loss time. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High School diploma, GED or equivalent, and eight (8) years of experience in safety engineering, industrial health and safety, or a related field.
OR
Associate’s degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Studies, or a discipline related to occupational health and safety, and six (6) years of experience in safety engineering, industrial health and safety, or a related field.
OR
Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Studies, or a discipline related to occupational health and safety, and four (4) years of experience in safety engineering, industrial health and safety, or a related field.
OR
Master’s degree in Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Environmental Studies, or a discipline related to occupational health and safety, and two (2) years of experience in safety engineering, industrial health and safety, or a related field.
Must possess and/or obtain:
+ Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
+ American Red Cross First Aid Certification, and American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification within 90 days of hire.
+ American Red Cross or American Heart Organization Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification or equivalent within 90 days of hire.
+ The ability to participate in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which defines each employee’s potential duties and responsibilities. This may include 12-hour work shifts, which may continue for 72 hours or more starting at any time an event might occur, 7 days a week, 24 hours per day.

Military Service Interview Preference
Veterans who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference, as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows the full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization, and shows the name, signature, title, and contact information of the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
