    Job Description:

    The University of Florida has an opening for the faculty position of Clinical Veterinarian and Assistant Director of Veterinary Services for Animal Care Services in Gainesville, Florida.

     

    The successful candidate will provide on-site clinical veterinary services in support of the researchers at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. In addition to providing clinical coverage for various species (primarily rodents), this position assists the Animal Care Services (ACS) Director in the management of veterinary services which includes directing activities related to the daily operations of the veterinary staff in providing veterinary medical care and technical services to investigators.

     

    Duties and responsibilities include developing policies, management of daily operations, and planning use of facilities, resources and personnel. Additional responsibilities include participation in overall ACS management which may include providing a back-up to the Director/Attending Veterinarian.

     

    This is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position reporting directly to the UF Attending Veterinarian and Executive Director of ACS.

     

    Additional responsibilities include participation in the development and improvement of policies and procedures pertaining to the program, working collaboratively with the UF IACUC by participating in inspections, reviewing IACUC protocols and serving as alternate member of the UF Gainesville IACUC, and providing advice and consultation on federal, state and local rules and regulations pertaining to animal use.

    Expected Salary:

    Commensurate with education and experience.

    Required Qualifications:

    + DVM from an AVMA accredited institution or ECFVG certificate and license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state in the United States.

    + ACLAM Board Certification

    + Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations and policies that govern the use of laboratory animals.

    + Working knowledge of laboratory animal husbandry and facilities.

    + Familiarity with surgical and medical procedures commonly performed in laboratory animals.

    + Experience with IACUC work and teaching/training.

    + Understanding of biological, chemical and radiation hazards.

    + Ability to work collaboratively with the Animal Care Services and IACUC staff, and with academic leaders and researchers throughout the UF Gainesville campus.

    + Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills.

    + Ability to work with basic computing systems and programs including web-based applications, telecommunication tools and videoconferencing software, and Microsoft Office.

    + The successful candidate must become licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Florida and obtain USDA accreditation within one year of employment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Ability to obtain USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Category II

    + Ability to obtain DEA registration

    + Ability to obtain clearance to work in an ABSL3 facility

    + 3-5 years experience working in laboratory animal medicine

    + Experience in management of facilities or personnel involved in an animal care program
