SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the VP, Chief Operational Excellence Officer for PSH, the Director, Operational Excellence is responsible for planning, monitoring, and directing the effective implementation of initiatives that drive tangible organizational results. The Director supports development of process acumen throughout the system and ensures that all staff coach others in order to spread their expertise. The Director is responsible for managing and coordinating enterprise-wide solutions that help Penn State Health achieve its strategic and operational objectives. This position will organize and oversee efforts directed through senior leadership of PSH that address strategic planning, continuous improvement, waste reduction, and innovation. Supports the creation of a lean management system to ensure operational excellence can be achieved throughout the enterprise – both in clinical and business areas. Using well established management principles and concepts the Director ensures achievement in operational and financial performance in partnership with senior leadership.
**ESSENTIAL DUTIES:** The percentage of time spent performing essential functions is 95%. Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
+ Accountable for design, implementation and leadership of the performance improvement program creating a culture of continuous improvement.
+ Initiates and facilitates redesign and process improvement strategies for strategically essential organizational priorities.
+ Accountable for the management system and coaching to assist with achieving results and meeting targets set by respective teams.
+ Annually identify areas of focus for PSH performance improvement team based on the strategic plan.
+ Utilizes, and drives the adoption and implementation of process improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, A3, PDCA) across the system to improve PI efficiency and effectiveness.
+ Serves as the expert on process improvement tools and techniques.
+ Acts as a consultant or advisor to leadership to build consensus and support for process improvement at the leadership level to the front line staff.
+ Leads and motivates a team of Operational Excellence Consultants/Coaches and support staff.
+ Provides periodic review of team member performance using both formal and informal mechanisms; mentor team members in best practices and provide skill development.
+ Management of all operational excellence staff, budget, and outcomes.
+ Develops and maintains relationships with front line staff, mid-level management, and senior leaders at both the system and local hospital level to effectively teach transformation methods (e.g. lean and other process improvement methodologies), tools, and applications throughout the system.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
+ Bachelor's degree
+ Minimum 10 years of directly related experience
+ 4-6 years of healthcare experience leading the development of a lean management system
+ Five years of leadership and management experience in leading operational excellence teams
+ Lean Six Sigma Certification (Black Belt/MBB) or equivalent required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):
+ Master’s degree (MBA or other similar)
+ Experience in curriculum development, teaching and instruction
+ Experience as a healthcare management consultant
+ Prior experience building and leading a team that is part of a transformation effort
+ Experience in developing and driving implementation of business strategies within the Healthcare industry
+ Experience building and leading a high performing operational excellence program in an academic health system
