Nexstar Topeka seeks a versatile Broadcast Meteorologist and News Producer to join our dynamic newsroom. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to deliver impactful weather coverage on-air while also shaping the day's news as a newscast producer.
The successful candidate will deliver weekend morning weather forecasts, produce our 9 p.m. newscast three days a week, and fill in on other meteorology shifts as needed.
Key Responsibilities
As a Meteorologist:
+ Prepare and present accurate, engaging weather forecasts across all platforms.
+ Monitor and respond to severe weather and breaking news.
+ Collaborate with the weather team to provide comprehensive coverage.
+ Post timely forecast updates and weather stories to web and social platforms.
+ Represent the station at community events and promotional appearances.
+ Shoot, write, and edit weather/news packages as needed.
As a News Producer:
+ Produce compelling daily newscasts with a strong mix of news and features.
+ Write and edit scripts, teases, and video content for broadcast and digital.
+ Approve scripts, time the newscast, and manage story flow.
+ Coordinate live shots and work closely with the team to deliver high-quality productions.
+ Post stories and videos to the website and social media.
+ Engage with viewers and audiences through digital platforms.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree in meteorology or related field.
+ Solid forecasting skills and familiarity with radar systems.
+ Strong writing, shooting, and non-linear editing skills (Adobe Premiere preferred.)
+ Familiarity with ENPS or similar newsroom systems is helpful.
+ Strong communication and time management skills.
+ Ability to meet deadlines and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
+ Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.
