    Job Summary

    The Centers for South Asian and Southeast Asian Studies (CSAS & CSEAS), housed within the LSA International Institute, are both long-standing, national leaders in promoting a deeper understanding of their regions. CSAS ( ii.umich.edu/csas ) and CSEAS ( https://ii.umich.edu/cseas ) offer a range of area-related courses taught by outstanding faculty, a scholarly lecture series, conferences, study abroad fellowships, student colloquiums, cultural programming, and opportunities to volunteer, sponsor and cosponsor a variety of events.

     

    CSAS & CSEAS are also US Department of Education designated National Resource Centers, funded to develop area studies education for this region of the world, in no small part by supporting the training of educators in these regions, and implementing and promoting area-related activities to business, media, and the general public.

     

    CSAS & CSEAS are seeking an individual to serve as a joint Outreach Coordinator. The individual will work closely with the faculty directors of both Centers, and coordinate efforts with the program specialiststo promote the activities of the Centers to the public, develop outreach programming, and implement K-14 educator training programs to encourage the learning and teaching about South and Southeast Asia in Michigan and more widely in the US.     This position has a multiple reporting relationship; primary functional supervision is provided by the Asia Centers Business Manager, and academic direction of the center is provided by faculty directors.

     

    This is a full-time, 40 hours per week position that will occasionally require evening and weekend work hours.

    Responsibilities*

    Public Events 35%

    + Coordinate and implement the Centers public cultural programming

    + Work with the Center Program Specialists to determine budgets for outreach projects and resources for the public

    + Oversee all aspects of outreach event planning including programming, marketing, and vendors

    + Coordinate and support the Centers short term artist residencies and visits, working to provide travel support, event coordination, and guest management

    + Provide support to Centers for other lectures and events on an as needed basis, especially with promotion and publicity initiatives

    K-14 Outreach Programming - 35%

    + Administer Centers K-14 teacher programs working with partners at U-M, Michigan public schools, local communities, regional schools, colleges, and universities to increase the visibility of Center resources

    + Develop relationships with education administrators and teachers to expand the Centers reach into K-14 to promote the Centers opportunities to teachers; communicating with recipients, consultants, and collaborators to ensure that all partners are aware of the information they need to be prepared for the grant experiences

    + Work with other outreach coordinators at Michigan and partner institutions to organize regular teacher workshops, supporting the lead unit in planning logistics for the event, and helping to coordinate among stakeholders and vendors

    Grant Reporting and Administration - 30%

    + Support report and data requests for the CSAS and CSEAS Title VI grants twice annually and contribute to grant proposal writing efforts

    + Provide data and narratives on the outreach activities of the centers for various center reports, communications and marketing materials

    + Learn individual grant requirements and ensure that projects and processes are compliant with requirements

    + Working with the Asia Centers Manager and Center program specialists, ensure that outreach projects stay within established budgets

    + Coordinate related payment processes with the II finance office, HR, Shared Services Center and vendors ensuring payments are in compliance with guidelines and regulations

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in a relevant international or area studies field or an equivalent combination of education and experience

    + Knowledge of South and Southeast Asian history and culture

    + Demonstrated excellence in written and oral English language communication

    + Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills

    + Ability to work effectively with a wide range of people, including faculty, students, colleagues, K-14 educators and children

    + Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as well as occasional travel for outreach activities

    + Ability to manage multiple projects and meet strict deadlines

    + Knowledge of Microsoft Office and G Suite required

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Master's degree in a relevant international or area studies field or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred

    + Proficiency in a South or Southeast Asian language

    + Previous experience in program and event planning

    + Previous experience in curriculum development, community outreach or K-14 teacher training activities

    + Knowledge graphic design software, social media tools, such as mailchimp, Facebook, and Twitter/X

    + One year University of Michigan experience and familiarity with University organization, practices, policies, and administrative procedures is preferred

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.     Additional Information

     

    This position is for a term-limited appointment through August 14, 2026, with the possibility of renewal dependent upon continued funding.

     

    The salary range for this position is $44,000 to $55,000, please note a higher salary may be offered based on equity and the selected candidates experience.
