Summary The position is established to serve as the Head Offshore Sailing Coach for the Inter-collegiate Offshore Sailing Team, a varsity sport. Responsibility for all planning, management, and coaching for such endeavors. Areas of responsibility include coaching the Offshore Sailing Team, management of assistant coaches, recruiting, public relations, basic to advanced Offshore Sailing and seamanship instruction, training and certification of instructors, and facility management. Responsibilities As a Sports Specialist (Offshore Sailing), you will: Develop and implement weekly, seasonal and annual practice and competition plans. Provide instruction of the highest level in offshore sailboat racing to skilled members of the sailing team to prepare them for races, regattas and championships. Provide proper motivation to the team members to reach their highest potential. Travel with midshipmen teams for deliveries and in over the road vehicles to and from regattas. Recruit athlete sailors by actively instructing, racing and participation in the sport in a manner and style that attracts candidates to seek admission to the Academy. Provide content for website and social media updates on team activities. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated and mid to senior level professional possessing integrity, stamina, and ingenuity, and capable of adjusting to various work environments, physical demands, and schedules. The individual must be customer service oriented, with unique skills to develop, manage and coach an Offshore Sailing Team at a collegiate level. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service. TRIAL PERIOD: This is an Excepted Service position. This job will be filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive service. Applicants selected for an excepted service position may be subject to a two-year trial period. GOVERNMENT TRAVEL CARD: This position involves travel. A government contractor-issued travel card will be issued and must be retained for official business only. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: You will be required to complete a background/security investigation and meet preliminary requirements prior to onboarding. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the Education and Specialized Experience requirements below. You must include experience in your resume and provide supporting documentation for verification. To qualify for the Grade 00, you must have at least one year of experience, it must include: Coaching experience greater than 5 years. Sailing experience at major events in larger keelboats (30 feet or longer). Sailing experience at major competitions in smaller keelboats (less than 30 feet). Maintenance experience including: rigging, splicing, winch maintenance and repair / replacement of sailing hardware. Highly Desirable: Five years competing in offshore sailing regattas with collegiate sailors. Minimum of six years coaching youth, high school and/or collegiate sailors. US Sailing Small Boat Instructor Level 3 or higher (or equivalent). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education Education Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- physical education. NOTE: Applicants who do not possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a field closely related to the duties required for the position may substitute a Bachelor’s Degree in an unrelated field if they also possess significant professional training and specialized experience that is closely related to the duties of the position at a level of complexity and responsibility equivalent to those performed in the position. Additional Information Position Information: Full-Time, Excepted Service appointment with an Initial Term Not-to-Exceed 13 months; however, each year with a satisfactory performance appraisal, the appointment may be extended for an additional year.
