    Summary This is a Full-Time Faculty Tenure-Track appointment in the Excepted Service, with an initial term not-to exceed June 26, 2027. Reappointments to additional one- or two-year terms are possible. If Tenure is achieved (after four to six years), employment will be made permanent, provided a satisfactory performance appraisal is received annually. Responsibilities As an Historian, your duties include: Position 1: Assistant Professor of History with focus on Maritime and Naval History: You will primarily teach US maritime and naval history course entitled History of Sea Power. The candidate should ideally have a background in the development of US economic power via seafaring and trade, but must also be capable of teaching military/naval history. Scholars of the Atlantic World are encouraged to apply. The candidate may be required to teach other courses required in our curriculum, including US domestic history since 1945, regional studies, and/or national security policy and strategy. Position 2: Assistant Professor of History with focus on US and International History. You will primarily teach three required courses: US domestic history since 1945, national security policy and strategy, and a regional studies course that addresses either Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, South Asia, or Europe. Scholars with training in US foreign relations, International History, and/or political economy are encouraged to apply. Requirements Conditions of Employment This is an Excepted Service position. This job will be filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive service. Applicants selected for an excepted service position may be subject to a two-year trial period. NOTE: The academic calendar of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy uses a trimester system in which classes are taught during eleven months of the year (July-June). Professors teach all eleven months, balancing requirements in teaching, service, and scholarship throughout the year. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated professional possessing integrity, stamina, and ingenuity, and capable of adjusting to various work environments, governmental policies, trainings, electronic resources, and schedules. Qualifications To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the education and specialized experience requirements. To qualify as an Historian (Assistant Professor); your resume and application materials (including college transcripts) must show that you have the education and specialized experience necessary to teach History courses at the college level. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education Individual Occupational Requirement: Degree: Doctorate in History; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Evaluation of Graduate Experience: Graduate study in the social sciences or humanities may also be credited when such study included training in historical research methodology; or the thesis approached the subject from an historical viewpoint and used professional historical research methodology and techniques in its preparation.
