    Marion IndependentSchool District Job Title: General Music Classroom Teacher Reports to: Building Principal Date Revised: July 2016 Basic Function: Helps students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences that include: singing, moving to music, playing instruments, creating and listening. Promote the overall mission of the school system, and work to maximize the educational opportunities available to each student. Essential Functions:

     

    + Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music and in instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choral music (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to secondary pupils.

    + Use the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

    + Instruct students in music theory, harmony, score and sight-reading, composition, music appreciation, and provides individual or group vocal and instrumental lessons.

    + Sing or play instrument to demonstrate musical scales, tones, and rhythm.

    + Gathers data, evaluates, and participates in a Professional Learning Community that works together to ensure students' success.

    + Plan a balanced music program and organize daily classroom work based on teaching outline prepared for course of study to meet curriculum requirements and so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

    + Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.

    + Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.

    + Use repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.

    + Plan, rehearse, direct and coach pupils in their individual parts, in fundamentals of musicianship, and ensemble performance.

    + Critique performance to identify errors and reinforce correct techniques.

    + Select and requisition books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records. Order, store, and inventory musical instruments, music, and supplies.

    + Communicate and meet with parents and school counselors on pupil progress and to resolve any student problems.

    + Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

    + Control the storage and use of school-owned property; make minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.

    + Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.

    + Maintain professional competence through in-service education provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.

    + Develop lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids stressing discovery and laboratory learning methods.

    + Provide opportunities when needed for individualized and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.

    + Use assessments to determine student mastery of academic standards and plan for interventions as needed.

    + Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.

    + Maintain all required paperwork and submit assignments and reports on-time as directed by District administrators and supervisors.

    + Communicate with students and parents, informing them of evaluation methods and practices, student progress and instructional methods that may further assist students.

    + Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.

    + Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.

    + Direct and monitor the activities of special education associates and classroom volunteers.

    Specifications/Qualifications:Education & Experience:

    + Bachelors Degree required

    + Valid Iowa Teaching License

    + License Endorsement:K-8 Music, 5-12 Music

    + Mandatory Reporter: Child and Adult Dependent Abuse certification

    + OSHA required certificate

The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical eight hour workday. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the classroom including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising indoor and outdoor activities, etc. The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors when supervising students outside of the classroom.
