Job Title: Material Handler
Job Description
We are looking for a dedicated Material Handler to join our team. The role involves training for the first few weeks, shadowing a trainer, and performing general clean-up tasks. You will learn color codes for steel, placement in the warehouse, and crane operation based on previous crane experience. This position requires walking for 8-10 hour shifts, often covering approximately 8 miles a day, and working both indoors and outdoors.
Responsibilities
+ Shadow trainer and perform general clean-up.
+ Learn color codes for steel and placement in warehouse.
+ Operate indoor and outdoor cranes.
+ Perform housekeeping duties associated with crane operation.
+ Pull beams and load flatbed trailers and railcars.
+ Rigging and getting onto the backs of flatbeds with ease.
+ Receive inventory and move materials using overhead crane.
+ Fill out shipping reports and bills of lading.
+ Document all outgoing loads.
+ Adhere to all safety rules, including visibility to other associates.
+ Train to operate saw, brake, forklift, steel bending machine, or beam saw/cutters.
+ Learn and retain inventory and coding system based on color.
Essential Skills
+ Ability to walk for 8-10 hour shifts.
+ Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors.
+ Experience in heavy industry or construction (1-2 years).
+ Ability to read a tape measure.
+ Capability to lift up to 50 lbs.
+ Proficiency in operating heavy equipment safely.
+ Ability to jump onto and off higher surfaces safely.
+ Overhead crane experience in heavy industry or military.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Experience in warehouse inventory management.
+ Skills in banding, loading, material handling, and logistics.
+ Experience with truck loading, crane operation, and rigging.
+ Familiarity with machine operating, forklift, bobcat, overhead crane, band saw, and industrial equipment.
+ Experience in distribution centers and handling sheet metal.

Work Environment
The work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings, with steel stored in the building and in two separate yards onsite. The facility predominantly has gravel flooring with certain concrete areas, requiring walking on uneven surfaces. Safety gear such as hard hats, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots are mandatory. The environment has a construction-like feel, which may not be suitable for individuals accustomed to standard manufacturing facilities.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Petersburg, Virginia.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
