    Position Summary

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University ( CSU ) seeks applications for a continuing Instructor/Sr. Instructor in clinical education to join the Veterinary Clinical Care Master’s program ( MSB VCC ) faculty. We are looking for individuals passionate about student instruction combined with experience in clinical small animal practice and preventive care education. This position will directly support the teaching roles of the MSB VCC program. Teaching roles include online clinical and technical skill development, and coaching and facilitation in the communication curriculum. Instruction will be shared among the faculty members in the MSB VCC program. This position combines evidence-based practices in online teaching with veterinary primary care education and professional skills development. This position qualifies for virtual or hybrid work. Successful candidates will need access to a stable and high-speed internet connection to facilitate online teaching, virtual meetings, and communication with students and colleagues.

These positions are the first two of a total of 8 proposed over the next couple of years that will support the development and launch of the new MSB VCC Curriculum in Fall 2025 and the opening of a new Veterinary Health and Education Complex ( VHEC ) in 2026.

The MSB VCC program serves as a respectful, supportive, and teaching-focused environment to empower MSB VCC students in their role as veterinary professional associates and active community partners in animal and human health. The students will take part in online courses for semesters 1-3 of the program, moving to face-to-face courses at the VHEC for fourth semester, and participating in a clinical internship at a previously approved off site locations in the fifth semester.

MSB VCC faculty will play integral roles as educators in a new position in veterinary medicine:

+ The online curriculum will encompass evidence-based practices in andragogy with various active learning techniques. Online lectures and laboratories will be designed with Universal Design for Learners incorporated throughout the program.

+ The CSU communication curriculum is a world-renowned model among veterinary colleges and was bestowed accolades from the American Veterinary Medical Association ( AVMA ) Council on Education. Currently, CSU veterinary students receive highly experiential communication education integrated throughout the curriculum. The MSB VCC students will receive similar training in the first through fourth semesters. The significant feature of the instruction is interaction with simulated clients (i.e., actor-educators), receipt of feedback from peers and client, and reflection on a video recording of their performance. The communication curriculum culminates in video review rounds and in-the-moment coaching during the fourth semester Communications Laboratory course in the context of real student-client interactions. Drs. Shari Lanning and Wayne Jensen, current Program faculty, are trained in communications. All VPA faculty will be required to undergo similar training and will assist in delivering this portion of the program. The involvement of any current DCS faculty requires prior approval from the DCS Department Head.

+ The MSB VCC program will use the newest technologies and techniques in models and simulations to reduce the use of animal cadavers and live animals in the curriculum. Silicone, urethane, and 3d printed models are currently being developed and utilized in the DVM program. The MSB VCC program is working alongside the DVM program to develop low and high-fidelity teaching models that fulfill program outcomes. Dr. Lanning has confirmed the continued collaboration with the DVM program and proposed maker space, as both programs benefit mutually from this partnership. Currently Dr. Lanning is making models and simulation for the program and will be training VPA faculty and staff as needed for future programmatic needs. In addition, we may be hiring the staff associated with the maker space to construct certain models as the program continues.
