Description of Work Unit
Veterinary Teaching Hospital
At the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ) we exist to educate the next
generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. This work unit exists to provide administration and direction of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and provide a support facility for service to the general public and referring veterinarians.

Position Summary
This position works late afternoon/evening hours managing all necessary care inside the surgical suites, assisting the team in providing a comfortable and safe environment for the patient and observing the team from a wide perspective to ensure aseptic and sterile technique is being maintained. This position must use sound judgment, interpersonal communication skills, and critical thinking to support the highest standard of care for all surgical patients.
This position supervises and coordinates activities for all emergency technician student hourly employees assigned to the operating room, which includes adhering to, advocating for, and enforcing accepted practices and protocols established for operating room job performance. This position assumes department-level leadership as the Operating Room Evening Lead in the absence of the OR Supervisor and OR Manager.
Responsibilities include evening supervision of the student After-Hours Surgical Team, collaborating with other OR staff members regarding caseload, independent decision-making in relation to staffing, resource allocation, operation of advanced surgical imaging equipment, surgical scheduling, and interdepartmental collaboration, ensuring that all operating room functions run efficiently. Additionally, this position serves as a liaison to the Central Supply staff and is cross-trained in that department to manage evening instrumentation processing for the small animal operating room.
A signing bonus may be considered for the successful candidate.
Required Job Qualifications
+ Registered Veterinary Technician ( RVT ) Certification or equivalent credential ( CVT , LVT , etc.) recognized by the state of employment.
+ Minimum 2 years of experience in a veterinary setting, with demonstrated proficiency in animal handling, client communication, and basic lab procedures.
SUBSTITUTIONS :Two years of experience as defined by the department will substitute for each year of required education. A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in veterinary/animal health technology will substitute for the associate degree and, at the agency’s discretion, the three years of experience.
NOTE : VETERINARY PRACTICE ACT – Effective January 1, 2024, anyone wanting to use the titles Registered Veterinary Technician, Veterinary Technician, RVT , or VT will have to be certified through the Colorado Association of Certified Veterinary Technicians ( CACVT ) AND registered through the Department of Regulatory Agencies ( DORA ). + Serves as a critical part of the surgical team to ensure patient care during surgery.
+ Perioperative nursing responsibilities include thorough OR setup, ensuring all supplies are available, performing the surgical safety checklist, positioning and aseptic preparation of the patient, circulating nursing duties, and cleaning the OR suite between cases.
+ Assists with specialty surgical scrub nursing duties for General Surgery, Oncology, and Orthopedics.

Acts as a leadership point in the absence of the Operating Room Supervisor and Manager during the evening shift.
Manages and supervises the operating room, coordinating activities and assigning work to OR staff and emergency technicians.
Ensures patients are ready for surgery, surgeons are available, the OR is cleaned and prepared with the necessary equipment, and a competent OR team member is assigned.
