    Summary: The Chief Quality Officer (CQO) serves as a key member of the executive leadership team for an academic, nonprofit healthcare system. The CQO is responsible for shaping and executing a system-wide vision for quality, safety, clinical performance, and patient-centered care. This role leads initiatives that drive continuous improvement in outcomes, equity, compliance, and experience across both academic and community settings. The CQO works closely with academic leadership, clinical departments, and operational teams to align quality initiatives with the healthcare system’s mission of education, research, and compassionate care.

     

    Education: MD, DO, RN, or other clinical degree required; advanced degree preferred (e.g., MPH, MHA, MBA, or equivalent). Certification in healthcare quality or patient safety (e.g., CPHQ, CPPS, CSHA) strongly preferred.

     

    License: RI Clinical License.

    Experience:

    • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in quality, safety, or clinical operations in an academic or nonprofit healthcare environment.

    • Proven experience leading quality improvement initiatives across complex healthcare delivery systems, including teaching hospitals and community-based sites.

    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with academic and clinical leadership.

    Skills and Abilities:

    • Deep knowledge of quality improvement science, regulatory standards, and accreditation processes.

    • Current and up-to-date knowledge of changes to existing laws, standards, and regulations, and the ability to explain and interpret same to facility wide personnel.

    • Exceptional research and presentation skills with a talent for engaging a variety of audiences, primarily comprised of adult learners.

    • Skilled in building cross-functional partnerships with clinical, academic, and administrative stakeholders.

    • Strong data analysis and performance measurement expertise.

    • Outstanding leadership, communication (both written and oral), and organizational change management skills, including methods of general report writing.

    • Commitment to advancing equity, community health, and academic excellence.

    • Technology proficient Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.

     

    Working Conditions, Physical Environment and/or Safety Requirements: This position may require duties including lifting up to thirty (30) pounds and require frequent standing, walking, stooping, bending, and reaching. Good visual and auditory acuity as well as good manual dexterity required. Travel required across the healthcare system’s hospitals, clinics, and academic campuses.
