About This Role:
Reporting to the Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the Lamar University Assistant Director of Setzer Student Center oversees the total operation of the Center, including Scheduling, Operations, Event Planning, Student Involvement and Programming, Civic Engagement, and Student Organization Offices. The Assistant Director is responsible for the direction and determination of goals, objectives, and the means to achieve these goals through the management of services, planning of budgets, and serving on various committees. This role includes responsibilities for publications, reports, and working with students, alumni (ae), and the public on event planning/special events. The incumbent will work alongside management teams for events in the Presidential area, ensuring high-profile events are executed flawlessly.
This position serves as the primary communication link between the Center and other campus departments and the community. Additionally, the Assistant Director will represent the university as a member of the Association of College Unions International, showcasing Lamar University’s commitment to excellence in student affairs. The Assistant Director will directly supervise three full-time professional staff members (Associate Director for Student Involvement and Programming, and an Administrative Associate Senior) and indirectly supervise two professional staff members (Coordinator for Student Involvement and Coordinator for Operations) and 50+ student employees. This leadership role demands a visionary approach to student engagement and dedication to fostering a vibrant campus community.
What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities:
+ Directs Operations by managing the comprehensive day-to-day operation and
maintenance of the Setzer Student Center, ensuring efficient space allocation,
vendor approvals, and overall facility management.
+ Fiscal management by overseeing the annual budget, applying fiscal planning
techniques, monitoring purchasing decisions, processing check requests and
budget transfers, and managing revenue from space reservations to ensure
financial stability.
+ Community building by collaborating closely with all center entities to build a
campus community through the development of execution of social, cultural,
and educational program activities.
+ Staff Supervision that leads to the recruitment, training, supervision and
evaluation of professional staff and student employees, fostering a supportive
and productive work environment.
+ Facilities Coordination by working in partnership with university facilities
management to ensure the custodial upkeep, preventive maintenance repairs,
repairs, and renovations of the Setzer Student Center and support the operation of the Bookstore and Dining Services.
+ Policy and Program Development by establishing and enforcing operating
policies and procedures in alignment with university regulations and state and
federal laws, supporting student organizations, and implementing strategic
initiatives to enhance programs, activities, and events of the Setzer Student
Center along with other duties that are assigned.

+ Demonstrated ability to lead and direct a medium-sized complex organization that provides programs and services that are essential to the student, staff, faculty, and community.
+ Proven ability to gather and utilize assessment data.
+ Ability to build relationships across campus with students, administrators, and other campus community members.
+ Demonstrated oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
The physical requirements for the Assistant Director typically involve a mix of office-based work that includes frequent sitting at a desk, working on a computer, and handling administrative tasks. Walking and standing along with regular movement across campus to oversee student operations, attend meetings, and manage events.
Job Conditions:
+ The job conditions are office-based within the Student Setzer center, traditionally working a typical full-time schedule with occasional evening or weekend hours for student events.

Minimum Qualifications
+ Master’s degree in education, college student personnel, higher education leadership, or a related field OR 5 + years of supervisory experience in a student center/union or in a similar work environment or a combination of education experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
+ 5 years or more of experience in managing budgets and strategically planning fiscal matters.
+ 5 years or more of experience in recruiting, hiring, training, and managing employees and student life.
+ Valid Driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications
+ Doctoral degree in Higher education, college student personnel, or a related field. · 10 years of progressive experience working in a college student center/union. · 10 years in recruiting, hiring, training, and managing employees.
+ 5 years in an upper-level administrative position or a comparable role.
+ Proficient in software programs such as Campus Groups, Collegiate Link, Social Tables, Ad Astra/Live25, Banner, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar programs.
