Responsibilities:
Provides direct research and teaching support at the senior professional level by taking charge of small, complex research projects or by directly participating in a major aspect of a larger research project; and provides guidance to or directly supervises technicians, laboratory aides and professional staff.
Technical
Provide technical and day-to-day lab support to faculty engaged in teaching and research. The candidate will be involved in activities in the teaching labs and will help organize, guide, and trouble-shoot student projects that feature varying degrees of complexity. The role requires a multi-disciplinary approach and will include work with design, development, fabrication, utilization, and testing of specialized equipment. Candidate should be conversant and have some familiarity with mechanical lab instrumentation including but not limited to strain gauges, pressure transducers, load cells, LVDTs, RVDTs, extensometers, thermocouples, accelerometers, high-speed video, and various other electronic measuring systems. In addition, the candidate should have some familiarity with general mechanical and electronic test methods including multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and working with universal test machines used in mechanical test. Knowledge of basic benchtop electronics and data acquisition is required.
Instruction
Conduct office hours, student team meetings, and train teaching assistants and coordinate with technical staff and other faculty across fall and spring semesters. The successful candidate will be heavily involved with the development of semester-long projects as well as modular short experiments.
Qualifications
BS in Engineering/Physics or Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering Technology with 3 - 5 years of experience working in an R&D-type lab environment.
- Must be able to work independently on design, assembly, and testing of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. Must have practical hands-on skills and be comfortable working on a variety of projects in a laboratory setting. Must possess basic mechanical, electrical, computer, and electronic skills for prototype systems.
- Skills in microcontroller/Arduino Raspberry Pi based systems for sensing and control including basic motor control.
- Skills in CAD (e.g., Solidworks/Creo/NX/OnShape), DAQ (e.g., LABView/Matlab), Data Visualization (e.g., Matlab/R/JMP).
- Skills in basic mechanical fabrication.
Desired:
- Experience with ovens, motors, pumps, small wind-tunnels or water-channels.
- Experience with basic 3-D Printing.
- Ability to develop and deliver lab lecture/instruction.
