ESOL & ABE Teacher
• Location: Queens, NY (In-Person & Virtual Instruction)
• Hourly Rate: $35/hour (Part-Time and As-Needed Basis)
• Class Schedule: Monday – Thursday
+ Day Classes: 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM | 12:00 PM – 2:30 PM
+ Evening Classes: 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM
• Reports to: Director of Adult Education and Immigration Services
About Us
Queens Community House (QCH) is seeking passionate and dedicated ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) & ABE (Adult Basic Education) Teachers to join our Adult Education Program.
Our program serves adult immigrant learners by enhancing their language proficiency and supporting their academic and career aspirations, particularly in the healthcare industry. We provide both in-person and online instruction, creating a flexible and inclusive learning environment.
Position Overview
The Teacher will work closely with the Director, Adult Education Manager, and Case Manager to deliver high-quality instruction in the absence of the assigned teacher. This is an excellent opportunity for educators looking to gain experience in adult education while working on a flexible, as-needed basis.
Key Responsibilities
• Instruction & Curriculum Delivery
+ Teach engaging, student-centered lessons based on the curriculum provided.
+ Deliver instruction in both in-person and virtual settings.
+ Integrate digital learning tools such as Burlington English, Ventures, and Smartboards.
+ Foster workforce readiness, digital literacy, and career development within lessons.
• Adaptability & Student Engagement
+ Modify lesson plans to align with students' real-life needs (employment, healthcare, civics, etc.).
+ Support a diverse group of learners by incorporating inclusive and culturally responsive teaching practices.
• Record Keeping & Assessment
+ Maintain accurate student records (attendance, participation, and progress).
+ Conduct pre- and post-assessments using Best Plus 2.0 and TABE 11/12, if trained.
• Professionalism & Program Support
+ Uphold QCH program policies, confidentiality, and procedures.
+ Manage working hours effectively and submit timecards via ADP in a timely manner.
Qualifications
• Required:
+ Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree a plus; foreign credentials accepted).
+ Minimum 3 years of experience teaching adults (ESOL, ABE, or GED preferred).
+ Strong understanding and application of adult learning principles.
+ Experience integrating technology in the classroom (Zoom, Google Suite, WhatsApp, online learning tools).
+ Ability to teach in-person in Queens and transition to online instruction as needed.
+ Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills.
• Preferred:
+ Familiarity with Pre-HSE and HSE curriculum and NYS HSE testing requirements.
+ Best Plus 2.0 and TABE 11/12 certification (RAEN training preferred).
+ Bilingual/multilingual candidates encouraged to apply (English/Spanish or English/Russian a plus).
