Program Overview:As a Certified Surgical Technician Trainee, you will enroll in a two-year associate degree program at MVCC. UHS will cover the full cost of tuition, textbooks, and select other materials. In addition, you will receive three paid days per week to attend classes and study. You’ll also have the option to work up to two additional days per week (or more, if desired) as an Operating Room Aide to gain hands-on experience.
Upon successful completion of the program, you will earn an Associate Degree in Surgical Technology, obtain certification as a Surgical Technician, and transition into a full-time Certified Surgical Technician role at UHS with a two-year work commitment.
What Does a Certified Surgical Technician Do?Certified Surgical Technicians (CSTs) play a critical role in surgical procedures by supporting surgeons and the surgical team before, during, and after operations. Their duties include:
+ Operating Room Preparation: Sterilizing equipment, organizing instruments, and ensuring the OR is ready.
+ Sterile Field Maintenance: Ensuring aseptic techniques are followed to prevent infections.
+ Patient Preparation: Assisting with prepping patients, including site disinfection.
+ Instrument Handling: Passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.
+ Specimen Handling: Labeling and managing tissue samples for lab analysis.
+ Equipment Maintenance: Cleaning and maintaining surgical instruments and supplies.
+ Post-Operative Support: Assisting with dressings and clean-up after surgery.
+ Team Collaboration: Working alongside surgeons, nurses, and other surgical staff.
