Description
Under general supervision of the Foreman the Lineman performs skilled line work in the operation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems for College Station Utilities in accordance with departmental procedures, processes, and established safety protocols.
Principal Duties
Duties require sufficient vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to perform assigned installation and maintenance duties as well as sufficient strength and stamina to climb, work at heights up to 90’, and lift and use equipment within utility safety standards.
This is the entry level class for this skilled electrical trade. Incumbents work under close supervision learning and performing aspects of the trade and learning how to work with energized high voltage distribution or transmission line voltages, while assisting Journeyman Lineman with the construction, maintenance, and repairs on the electrical overhead and underground distribution and transmission system. This class is distinguished from the Journeyman Lineman in that the latter is competent to perform the full range of skilled duties.
+ Learn and assist with performing the construction, maintenance, and repairs on the electrical overhead and underground distribution and transmission systems.
+ Learn and assist with operating, inspecting, and maintaining aerial devices, digger/derricks, excavation equipment, and other electric line related equipment.
+ Learn and observe proper safety precautions, particularly when working on or near energized circuits and with hazardous chemicals.
+ Dig pole and anchor holes. Load, unload, remove, install, transport, and frame poles.
+ Set transformers and pull overhead and underground primary and secondary conductors.
+ Operate, inspect, and maintain aerial devices, digger/derricks, excavation equipment, and other electric line related equipment.
+ Climb poles with climbing hooks and belt, troubleshoot underground and overhead distribution systems, set transformers and pull underground primary and secondary conductors.
+ Assist Journeyman class with performing distribution switching, documentation and mapping information, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
Valid Texas Class A CDL or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date
Must maintain a residence within a 40 minute response time of the Utility Service Center within 6 months of accepting position Available to work on-call, emergency respond
weekends, and evenings
Availability and willingness to participate, as needed in working overtime and/or on evenings and weekends
Ability to progress through skill plan program, within specified period of time, as defined in department’s skill plan policy
Ability to perform essential duties in an environment that entails a variety of weather conditions and extreme temperatures; working at heights of up to 90’ above ground level;
frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, climbing, and pushing/pulling; using hoist and dollies to lift and move heavy objects; and physically lifting and moving
objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Possess basic level computer skills
Preferred: Graduate of a Lineman School or equivalent experience
Apprentice – six months to one year of experience performing general labor duties
Journeyman Lineman – Department of Labor Journeyman certification or equivalent
