Assistant Coach, William Smith Soccer

The successful candidate will assist the head coach in the organization and management of a competitive NCAA Division III women’s soccer program, including serving as the recruiting coordinator. The William Smith Soccer program is comprised of two teams- varsity and development. The position responsibilities will include teaching and coaching student-athletes for successful competition; supporting student-athletes’ academic success; recruiting prospective students; scouting opponents; fundraising; cultivating alumni and parent relations; team travel planning; administrative tasks; and other duties as assigned.
Essential Responsibilities:
• Teaching and Coaching:
o teach student-athletes all related principles and rules of the sport
o be prepared to lead team in the absence of the head coach
o assist in the preparation, implementation and evaluation of practice and game plans
o operate digital platforms to develop training, practice and game plans
o maintain an exemplary standard of conduct, which reflects the highest level of professionalism and good judgment
o be knowledgeable of and compliant with all institutional, department, NCAA and conference policies, rules and regulations
• Counseling and Advisement of Student-Athletes:
o develop and maintain effective communication with student-athletes
o reinforce academic success as a priority
o encourage student-athletes to foster a positive relationship with faculty, deans and staff
• Recruiting:
o Serve as the recruiting coordinator for William Smith soccer- varsity and development teams alongside all other staff members
o effectively recruit prospective student-athletes under the direction of the head coach and consistent with the Colleges’ mission
o maintain the sport-specific recruiting electronic database
o recruit student-athletes who coincide with the academic profile of HWS students
o maintain open communication with other William Smith coaches regarding shared prospects
• Professional Development:
o maintain active membership in professional sport organizations
o pursue formal and informal educational opportunities
o participate in William Smith Peak Performance and other educational seminars/trainings
• Community Engagement/Fundraising
o promote the sport and William Smith Athletics in area communities; lead community service initiatives
o maintain a positive relationship with interested constituents (e.g. youth groups, civic organizations, media)
o assist in the planning and management of fundraising activities
o develop a positive relationship with William Smith alumnae and parents
Other Department Responsibilities (approximately 20% of full-time responsibilities):
o serve on Athletics Department operational teams as a game day manager (sport to be assigned by Associate AD for Events)
o assist with department initiatives
o represent the department on campus committees, as assigned
Other Information:
This is a full-time, 10-month, benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the academic year, with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours’ time period. Evening and weekend work are required. Annual salary range is $50,338.17 to $52,855.07.
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. A minimum of 4 years of soccer coaching and/or playing experience at the college-level required. Candidates must demonstrate strong potential to teach, lead and counsel college student-athletes and have enthusiasm for the recruiting duties of the position. The candidate must be a person of integrity, high ethical standards, have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to the NCAA Division III philosophy and mission of William Smith Athletics. Competence with technology resources and a current U.S. driver’s license are vital to fulfilling the responsibilities of this position. CPR and First Aid certification required (may be obtained at HWS).
