Finance, Planning, and Budgeting (FPB) encompasses the major central financial, planning, and budgeting functions for the University of Washington, including:
• Finance & Budget Strategy
• Institutional Analytics & Decision Support
• Policy, Planning & State Operations
• University Business Services
The Institutional Analysis (IA) and Institutional Reporting (IR) teams within FPB are responsible for supporting the University’s federal and state reporting requirements and providing reports and research that support the decision-making of senior leadership. In addition, the teams are responsible for responding to a wide variety of internal and external information requests about students, faculty and staff, and other key areas of university activities. As a part of that responsibility, IA and IR collaborate with university partners on institutional reporting, analysis and data management needs.
**Reporting to the Director of IA, the Institutional Research Analyst** supports the university’s data-informed decision-making processes by collecting, analyzing, and reporting data related to institutional assessment and effectiveness. This role is ideal for individuals with an excellent foundation in data analysis and a passion for applying statistical techniques to higher education research. This position works closely with internal stakeholders to provide data insights for institutional planning, policy development, and student success initiatives. The Institutional Research Analyst will also contribute to standard reports and develop visualizations using Tableau, Power BI, or other BI tools.
This position will require learning about data elements and sources in a complex data environment; development of consistent definitions and methodology and supporting staff in IA, IR and UW-IT to develop conceptual data models that support campus reporting and analysis needs. In many cases, the data elements available lack adequate documentation. Consequently, understanding which data elements to use and how they should be combined will involve extensive individual exploration and consultation with data custodians on all three UW campuses.
The Institutional Research Analyst will eventually require advanced knowledge of institutional data in and across the following areas: student (including admissions and financial aid); faculty/staff/finance; physical space and space utilization. The Institutional Research Analyst will help the IA and IR teams develop operational data definitions, reporting and analysis methodologies, and user-friendly business intelligence solutions for campus stakeholders. As a result, the person in this position must have patience and good interpersonal skills to translate stakeholder requirements into both technical and user-friendly language.
This position requires intensive solo work, group work, and one-on-one interviews to determine requirements. Time management is also vital, as there will always be data quality issues, but the person in this position must also keep big picture priorities in mind to avoid spending time addressing data outliers that do not negatively impact the quality of our deliverables.
Duties & Responsibilities:** **Report Building, Data Visualization & Analysis

• Work closely with the Data Quality Analyst to integrate data from multiple sources, ensuring consistency in definitions and methodological approaches

• Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Statistics, Social Sciences, or other related fields and 3 years of experience in data analysis, visualization, institutional research, or related field is required

• Basic understanding of statistical methods and data visualization.
• Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI
• Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present data findings clearly
• Attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy

Familiarity with SQL or database querying.
Experience with multivariate regression analysis and predictive modeling.

We encourage applicants to apply even if they do not feel they possess all the skills listed below; we understand that it will take some time for the successful applicant to strengthen specific position skills where needed, to learn about the university systems, campuses, and vendor collaborators, to develop a deep understanding of the FPB environment itself.
