We are excited to invite applications for the Fitness & Wellness Coordinator position within the Department of Campus Recreation at SUNY Oneonta. This role offers a unique opportunity to inspire and support our campus community in achieving their health and wellness goals. Join us in fostering a vibrant and active environment! This is a 10-month position with 2-month non obligation period.
This position is part of the Department of Campus Recreation, within the Student Affairs Division. The Campus Recreation team offers diverse recreational experiences including intramural sports, 15+ club sports, 2 fitness centers, group fitness classes, fitness and wellness programming and education, regular guided outdoor trips, an Outdoor Leadership program, and equipment loans & rentals for the campus community. Our goal through these opportunities is to empower participants to become leaders, discover community, create healthy social, emotional, and physical behaviors, and become increasingly self-aware and embracing of others.
The Fitness & Wellness Coordinator will report directly to the Director of Campus Recreation. This position will play a pivotal role in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for diverse populations. Key responsibilities include supervising the fitness center and its staff, developing and managing fitness classes, and overseeing wellness programming and education. The coordinator will also handle administrative tasks such as policy formulation, budget management, and strategic planning, ensuring the smooth operation of fitness and wellness facilities and programs. This role is essential in promoting a positive and healthy relationship with fitness and physical wellness across the campus community.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Key Duties & Responsibilities
+ Foster a culture and environment that is welcoming to diverse populations, respectful, and manifests a positive healthy relationship with fitness and physical wellness.
+ Fitness Center & Staff Supervision (50%)
+ Hire, train, supervise, evaluate, and schedule 30-50 student Fitness Center employees for our fitness centers.
+ Provide leadership for student staff by providing continuous education for staff to enhance skills and obtain/maintain appropriate certifications
+ Work with the Director and Athletics Department to develop annual maintenance plans, long-term projects, and replacement schedules.
+ Ensure equipment is kept in optimal operating condition and receives routine cleaning and maintenance.
+ Communicate with the athletics department and vendors to ensure broken and missing equipment is repaired or replaced.
+ Effectively manage risks through staff training and keeping documentation.
+ Schedule and market open fitness recreation times in our fitness centers and studios.
+ Fitness Classes (20%)
+ Develop, update, and implement policies, procedures, and guidelines addressing potential risks associated with group fitness and small group training programs to maintain appropriate standard of care and safety.
+ Coordinate the development of learning outcomes for associated participants and student employees
+ Recruit, supervise, and schedule fitness class instructors for regular programming. Work with fitness instructors on programming and scheduling facilities.
+ Prepare a calendar of events for Fitness Classes and fitness & wellness education and programming.
+ Fitness & Wellness Programming & Education (15%)
+ Supervise, schedule, and facilitate experiential learning opportunities for Fitness & Wellness Interns from the Exercise Science program.
+ Engage and educate the campus on fitness, health, and wellness topics through classes, workshops, and events.
+ Plan, organize, and implement student centered wellness programming.
+ Offer orientation classes that introduce students to fitness center equipment and how to use the centers safely.
+ Create continuing education opportunities for campus community members to pursue certifications.
+ Administration & Assessment (15%)
+ Formulate and interpret policy and procedure for the fitness centers, fitness classes, and wellness education programs.
+ Responsibly maintain an operational budget for fitness & wellness recreation facilities and programs.
+ Perform accurate and timely payroll management for all fitness staff.
+ Effectively market and communicate fitness recreation opportunities including hours of operation, classes, trainings, and events.
+ Maintain and organize accurate facility and program documentation.
+ Ensure card swipe access is working appropriately and participation data is properly recorded and included in annual reporting.
+ Participate in Department of Campus Recreation strategic planning and regularly reports assessment and statistical data pertaining to operations, participation, and staff development
The position is required to work a varied schedule, including occasional early mornings, late nights and weekends. The coordinator must be self-directed and self-motivated, have the ability to work independently and collaboratively and must be willing to serve as a representative on campus-wide and departmental committees

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's degree (preferred major in exercise science, exercise psychology, kinesiology, or related field of study)
+ Experience working in the fitness industry (fitness classes, fitness center operations, facility management, etc).
+ Experience effectively supervising a staff
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Additional:
+ First Aid & CPR/AED Certification
Preferred:
+ Experience developing and implementing fitness and wellness programs and events.
+ Experience in a comprehensive recreation setting.
+ Experience in fitness facility management
+ Preferred certifications (ACE, ACSM, W.I.T.S., NASM, NSCA or similar): Personal Trainer, Health/Wellness Coach, Group Exercise Instructor, or other related certifications.
+ Experience working with and/or serving diverse populations
