Coastal Sciences Division encompasses a broad range of disciplines, including coastal ecosystems, environmental biogeochemistry, coastal resources modeling, technology development and biotechnology, biofuels development, marine energy development and offshore wind. These underpin three key themes for research:
+ Enabling sustainable development of ocean energy
+ Understanding and mitigating long-term impacts of human activities, including climate change, on marine resources
+ Protecting coastal environments from security threats

Responsibilities
The Coastal Sciences Division within the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking an Operations Specialist to assist with the safe conduct of operations associated with the PNNL Sequim Campus. The successful candidate will be working with a PNNL Sequim focused Operations team and with researchers to ensure that PNNL processes and procedures are followed for all laboratory and field research activities.
Integrates operational capabilities, requirements, and solutions across research and support organizations to enable and enhance effective and efficient project execution in support of the Lab's mission. Maintains an awareness of existing and planned changes in the operational risk profile of assigned envelope. Maintains situational awareness of operational needs and emerging regulatory requirements, providing analysis of options and recommendations to mitigate exposure to operational risk and reduce the frequency of operational upset conditions. During upset conditions, assists management in the identification and implementation of immediate actions. This may include leading or participating in critiques and accident investigation, participating in causal analyses, and identifying and managing corrective actions and lessons learned. Evaluates the need for, and provides necessary Subject Matter Expert (SME) support to line management, staff, and Project Management Offices to assist with assessment activities and risk identification and mitigation. Manages the day-to-day work being conducted in IOPS spaces including coordinating, scheduling, and logistics of research staff, crafts personnel, and other visiting researchers. Maintains and manages the utilization of equipment, systems, and capabilities within the IOPS space. Coordinates operations and preforms duties within the DOE and appropriate regulatory agencies requirements.
This position will manage support operations of laboratory spaces across the PNNL Sequim Campus and will interface closely with other operationally focused individuals including the Operations Manager (Sequim) the Field Service Representatives, the Environmental Compliance Representative and the research line management. This position will report to the Integrated Coastal and Research Technology Group Leader.
This position will support both research and facilities organizations by assisting with operations across the campus. This position will help ensure safe, secure, compliant, and effective operations associated with the Coastal Sciences Division and Facilities & Infrastructure Operations Division. The Operations Specialist will champion safe conduct of research and strive to create a strong safety culture across the Divisions.
Job duties and expectations include, but are not limited to:
_Coastal Sciences Research_
+ Supports Operations of the Laboratories by working closely with the Operations Manager, CSMs, Facilities, and researchers to ensure safe conduct of operations within all laboratory and outdoor spaces on campus
+ Perform and document laboratory space assessments and activity observations to ensure safe conditions.
+ Collaborate on new lab activity development to maintain consistency and high standards across the lab.
+ Conduct periodic reviews of research activities in laboratory spaces.
+ Collaborate with technical staff on Offsite Risk Management Plans to provide insight and guidance on expected risks and proposed mitigations for offsite work.
+ Manage laboratory group equipment inventory, maintenance and repairs.
+ Maintain a Purchasing Card for research operations purchases and performs as a TOR-2 to assist with chemical and equipment purchases.
+ Collaborate with others to help manage legacy equipment, chemicals, and samples (e.g., during lab moves, when staff leave Sequim, or when staff roles change).
+ Mechanical aptitude and basic knowledge of engines, pumps, compressors, hydraulics and other mechanical and electrical systems commonly found in marine labs
+ Demonstrated experience working on complex problems and providing solutions
+ Communicates well with internal and external teams (service providers)
+ Writes and manages preventative maintenance work orders including the completion of drills, safety inspections, and mechanical services
+ Identifies improvement/efficiency opportunities
+ Develops a professional network throughout the laboratory
+ Works independently with increasing responsibility
_Facilities & Infrastructure Operations_
+ Supports the collaborative research mission of PNNL, including tasks as directed by the Building Manager, and to ensure assigned activities are coordinated / completed in a timely, cost-effective manner with limited impact on occupant operations.
+ Performing daily walk-throughs of facilities to assess general conditions.
+ Perform Preventative Maintenance and Corrective Maintenance activities.
+ Support R&D work activities
+ Maintaining and expanding an effective working relationship with all members of the Core Team and occupant research organizations.
+ Working with customers including lease owners and R&D personnel on planned service interruptions for maintenance and construction activities. This position will also assist members of the working group in the oversight of off shift activities.
+ Posting occupant notices for special conditions such as Fire Alarm System testing/impairments, outages, and other special circumstances. Additionally, this position will be responsible for maintaining all compliance posting in facility/common space.

+ Approximately 10% travel required.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
+ BS/BA and 5 years of relevant experience -OR-
+ MS/MA or higher and 3 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
+ ABYC Marine Electrical Certification, >3yrs experience working on and around vessels (maintenance and electrical)
+ Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) Able Seaman(AB) or Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED) or other license issued by USCG, UNOLS marine technician experience
+ NOAA survey technician experience
+ Washington State Boating Certificate or other equivalent
+ Experience with Lean and 5S principles

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation.
