Overview
The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.
Responsibilities
The Instrument Development and Automation Laboratory (IDAL) team at the Environmental Molecular Science Laboratory (EMSL) is currently seeking an outstanding and versatile Tech Intern. We are developing a new “Makerspace” at EMSL, and we are looking for an intern to help our technicians and engineers keep the spaces organized and assist users. Someone who is excited to learn new tools will have the opportunity to learn how to operate the tools in the space (3D printers, laser engraver, power tools). The candidate would assist IDAL in our other laboratory spaces with organization and taking requests for new projects. There will also be opportunities to assist in design, maintenance and building of unique electronic components, 3D printed parts, and/or robotic systems as part of collaborations with our scientific staff. The candidate will be supported by multiple mentors in IDAL. As the successful candidate develops in their role, there is an expectation of autonomy while working on tasks. This position is full-time on-site during the summer months and then part-time on-site during the school year based on the selected candidate’s schedule.
The intern will:
+ Prioritize safety of themselves and others when working in lab.
+ Be respectful of their colleagues.
+ Follow instructions when given and follow up when they are vague or a barrier is met.
+ Learn the balance between asking for help and trying to problem solve independently.
+ Be motivated to do the tasks that need to be done, from picking up a broom to designing a circuit.
+ Demonstrate consistency and quality work in routine tasks.
+ Be inquisitive and creative when learning something new or designing a new solution.
+ Collaborate in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment.
+ Applicant is expected to have an inquisitive mind, a willingness to learn new skills and processes.
This position will require onsite work, 40 hours per week during the summer. If extended into the academic year, the assignment may transition to part-time hours while maintaining the onsite requirement.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Candidates must have a high school diploma /GED or higher
