    **Location** : This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

     

    General Summary of Job Responsibilities

     

    The Senior Principal Civil Engineer is the subject matter expert who develops and implements process standards on design, planning, and oversight for the construction of infrastructure complex projects. These can include renovation and construction of varying structures such as; buildings, dams, pipelines, etc. The incumbent will be the point of contact and Consumers representative on multiple large and complex company projects working with internal and external resources to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. The Senior Principal Civil Engineer will lead teams of engineers and technicians on multiple large complex projects, delegate work and responsibilities to lower level engineers, as well as guide and mentor engineers to enhance the impact on the achievement of functional results.

     

    The Senior Principal Civil Engineer will manage large scale engineering projects efficiently, manage civil engineering standard designs that are used by all gas asset types, and provide leadership to project teams and mentorship to junior engineers.

     

    + Manage Large Scale Engineering Projects

    + The individual will be assigned complex, high risk, or unique projects

    + Manage standard designs

    + There are a growing number of civil standard drawings that get used by multiple gas asset types: pipe supports, rest blocks, blow down valve supports, launcher/receiver foundations, standard light pole foundations, gas analysis building foundations

    + This individual will be responsible for the design behind the drawings

    + The Sr Prin Civil Engineer would be responsible to publish standard scopes of work that are frequently used and should be formalized and available across gas

    + Leadership & Mentorship

    + The individual will supervise contracted staff

    + The individual will benefit the professional development of the team, offering guidance that enhances the overall skill set of the group

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Lead internal coworkers, architects, contractors, surveyors on developed processes of installations or reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors that will affect construction & to ensure projects progress properly

    + Responsible for project progress and ensuring design specifications, safety, and sanitation standards are met; upon completion of a project, inspects, repairs, and maintain the structures as needed

    + Foster a culture of safety on all projects, ensure that risks are identified and mitigated

    + Manage the work of multidisciplinary project team members and provide guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs, modifications, and structural repairs

    + Use design software and drawing tools to accurately render and communicate designs; plan and design other necessary and related systems and structures such as transportation or hydraulics

    + Prepare feasibility studies, reports, designs, calculations, cost estimates, construction schedules, and other technical documentation

    + Assess strength of foundations, concrete, asphalt, or steel by testing materials and soil using appropriate methods to ensure safe modifications/building

    + Perform fieldwork and data collection as necessary and undertake fieldwork when required, such as soil testing and surveying

    + Oversee the design specifications by computing load and grade requirements, material stress factors, flow rates, and similar parameters

    + Comply with all relevant legislation, codes of practice, and professional standards

    + Plan projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data

    + Estimate materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine project costs

    + Prepare proposals, reports, specifications, calculations, and other deliverables as required

    + Draft and present reports on complex topics related to projects such as environmental impact statements and right-of-way descriptions that adhere to all local, state, and federal codes and regulations

    + Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

     

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

     

    + Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar software

    + Understanding of safety regulations related to assigned projects

    + Detail-oriented and accurate

    + Understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools

    + Thorough understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings, pipelines, and other related structures

    + Ability to identify and solve complex problems

    + Verbal and written communication skills

    + Ability to be both creative and analytical

    Education/Experience

    + Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with ten (10) or more years of experience in an advanced civil engineer role

    + **[OR]** Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with ten (10) or more years of experience in an advanced civil engineer role

     

    Certifications

     

    + Professional Engineer License required
