The Director of Biomedical Engineering Services serves as the organizational leader responsible for managing biomedical engineering and healthcare technology support for both in-house and third party repair and preventative maintenance of biomedical and healthcare technology equipment. This role will be the primary strategic and operational relationship manager with third party contracted vendors for biomedical service for ProMedica’s acute care and PPG facilities. This role ensures consistent service quality, regulatory compliance, and the effective lifecycle management of medical equipment. The Director will act as the primary liaison between clinical leadership, hospital administration, and in-house repair and third-party vendors to ensure biomedical engineering services meet the needs of patient care teams and align with enterprise goals. The role is expected to lead a systematic review of current delivery models, challenge historical vendor assumptions and drive systemwide alignment. The role is focused on performance management, cost control, capital planning and continuous improvement of the biomedical program through proactive engagement with both internal stakeholders and the vendor partners.
ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Vendor Relationship Leadership: Serve as the operational lead and strategic partner for biomedical engineering and healthcare technology vendors. Facilitate communication, service escalations, and alignment of vendor operations with ProMedica’s goals. Lead service transitions as needed from existing vendors, and lead make/buy decisions on what should be done internally vs. by a third party by evaluating vendor performance objectively against evolving system needs and develop business cases for insourcing or alternative partners.
2. Contract Oversight & SLA Management: Monitor vendor performance against service level agreements (SLAs), including uptime, response times, and preventive maintenance. Identify and address gaps in service delivery and initiate corrective action plans when necessary.
3. Internal Capability Development: Assess and develop internal biomedical resources to support internal service delivery. Develop the roadmap to strengthen internal capabilities. Collaborate with HR to define staffing models and recruiting. Implement necessary technology platforms and processes to support internal operations.
4. Stakeholder Collaboration: Interface with hospital Presidents, clinical department leaders, infection prevention, supply chain, and IT to align biomedical support with care delivery and capital planning processes. Ensure internal customer satisfaction and resolve concerns proactively.
5. Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure full compliance with The Joint Commission, CMS, FDA, and other regulatory bodies. Oversee documentation and audit readiness related to equipment service history and compliance logs.
6. Financial & Asset Management: Partner with Finance and vendors to validate service invoices, manage contract value, and assess cost-saving opportunities. Oversee the capital planning process for biomedical assets and recommend lifecycle strategies including replacement, critical end of life support and reallocation of equipment to optimize total asset lifecycle.
7. Technology Lifecycle Planning: Collaborate on initiatives to standardize and modernize clinical equipment, reduce downtime, and improve service quality. Support integration with electronic systems and partner with IT on cybersecurity (e.g., EMR, INFOR, asset management/computerized maintenance management system platforms, and cyber platforms).
8. Performance Metrics & Reporting: Generate and analyze reports on asset uptime, PM completion rates, vendor responsiveness, and capital planning progress. Deliver insights to senior leadership and inform decision-making with data-driven recommendations.
9. Operational Project Management: Support or lead biomedical-related projects including new facility onboarding, clinical expansions, and equipment fleet optimization.
10. Other Duties as Assigned
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Healthcare Administration, Business, or a related field
Skills: Strong relationship and vendor management skills; Deep understanding of clinical operations and equipment lifecycle; Ability to balance service quality, compliance, and cost effectiveness; Excellent communication, analytics and organizational leadership.
Years of Experience: 7+ years in hospital operations or biomedical engineering program leadership
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Engineering or Business.
Years of Experience: 7+ years in hospital operations or biomedical engineering program leadership
Certification: Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM) or Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Personal Protective Equipment: Must be able to access patient care and technical service areas
Physical Demands: Must be able to travel between ProMedica acute care sites and attend in person meetings at hospitals and the system office.
