    The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.

     

    **The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a 50% FTE Research Scientist/Engineer 4.** **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Work to validate and implement testing protocols for physiologic assessments of autonomic function (25%)

    + The individual hired will be responsible for developing methods and protocols for using specialized equipment that allows the separate and integrated assessment of cardiovascular and other autonomic (e.g. pupillary) regulatory functions, at rest and in response to physiologic and psychological perturbations or stressors; validating these methods; and initializing and maintaining the training of other study staff members in the developed methods.

    + The hire will be responsible for continuing to update these methods fully in response to emerging methods and scientific questions.

    + This work requires significant training and expertise in the specific methods used for autonomic testing, as well as expertise and experience in the process of developing and validating methods for use in multimodal clinically-oriented scientific research.Develop and implement data validation, management and analysis methods for data associated with these assessments (25%)

    + The individual hired will be responsible for developing and implementing systems for data management and analysis for physiologic assessments of autonomic and related assessments.

    + This work requires an integrated understanding of domain-specific scientific knowledge, an understanding of the data and its limitations and potential misinterpretations, the scientific questions the data will be used to address, and the analytic methods that will be used.

    + The individual will also be involved throughout the analysis process for these data sets, directly implementing high level planning and analysis, and training and supervising more junior lab members in the use of these data.Draft scientific manuscripts and funding applications related to these projects (20%)

    + The individual hired will play a key role in guiding the drafting and dissemination of results involving these data, as well as the development of funding applications drawing from these data.

    + The individual will both be primary author on key manuscripts and will serve as an experienced mentor guiding junior lab members through the process of writing results related to these data.

    + This work will require strong writing and communication skills, with significant experience in scientific writing of diverse types.Collaborate in the supervision and training of students and advanced trainees working in the lab (20%)

    + The individual hired will be responsible for contributing at a high level to the training, development and mentorship of diverse lab members including trainees (psychiatry residents, graduate students, medical students and/or undergraduate volunteers working in or with the lab) and more junior study staff members (study coordinators and research assistants).

    + This includes technical training, as well as mentorship in areas of scientific writing, analytic methods, and career development.Contribute to the identification and development of future directions of research that build off the current projects (10%)

    + The individual hired will play a key role in the integration of new knowledge and results with the existing state of the field in order to identify and develop new directions for scientific inquiry. This will include both core projects in our laboratory, such as multi-year, multi-site randomized clinical trials, as well as the exploration of novel or pilot processes and directions, and the support of students and trainees. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**

    + Master's Degree in Pharmacology, Neuroscience, or a related field, AND four years of job-related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**

    + Has established technical expertise; serves as a resource to research unit/department.

    + Experience and comfort with reading and writing scientific publications that include bench, translational and clinical research.

    + Has domain knowledge regarding autonomic physiology and neuroscience, central and peripheral mechanisms of stress reactivity, approaches to the clinical assessment of autonomic regulatory processes, and translational neuroscience approaches to research.

    + Experience with the development and validation of research methods related to physiology and/or neuroscience.

    + Experience with using R to analyze clinical and observational data for publication. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**

    + Experience with conducting both basic and clinical research projects.

    + Experience training, supporting, and mentoring more junior lab members.

    + Experience with a variety of data analytic techniques.
