The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Southern Maine is seeking applicants for a one-year fixed-length visiting professor position as Assistant or Associate Professor for the Counselor Education Program for the 25/26 (September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2026). We welcome applicants in the Clinical Mental Health or School Counseling specialty areas.
The USM Counselor Education program (https://usm.maine.edu/counselor-education/) is accredited by CACREP (school, clinical mental health, and clinical rehabilitation). The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of foundational courses (i.e.: Orientation to the Counseling Profession, Counseling Skills, Human Development, etc.), as well as in the clinical mental health (Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Professional Issues of MHC, etc.), and school counseling concentrations (School Guidance Programs & Services, Counseling Children and Adolescents, etc.); engage in regular student advising; assist with admissions; have an emerging scholarship agenda; and be actively involved in service to the college, university, and the profession.
The Counselor Education department philosophy is to prepare our graduates to act as facilitators of change in the lives of individuals at all developmental levels. By modeling high standards of professionalism and offering a foundation of knowledge, skills, self-awareness, and practice, the Counselor Education program aspires to prepare counselors of the highest quality to work in schools, mental health agencies, businesses, hospitals, rehabilitation organizations, private practice, and other settings.
The targeted starting date for this position will begin in the Fall semester of 2025 and will pay an annual salary of $65,000 for Assistant Professor and $74,750 for Associate Professor. This is primarily an on campus, in-person teaching position. Candidates must reside within commutable distances from the USM campuses. This requirement is essential for the ability to participate in supporting and building upon our university culture of "student focused every day" and allows for regular participation in on-campus activities, meetings, and fulfills the responsibilities of the role effectively.

Required Qualifications:
+ An earned doctoral degree in Counselor Education
+ Or: ABD with evidence of completed doctoral degree to be provided by start date
+ Credentialed or eligible for credentialing as a National Certified Counselor (NCC).
+ Experience as a certified professional school counselor or licensed professional counselor
+ Experience with both face-to-face and online education and/or training.
+ Evidence of potential to pursue a relevant scholarly and research agenda.
