Buildings, Safety, Engineering & Environmental Department
Boiler Inspector
Under general supervision, inspects boilers and pressure vessels and their auxiliary equipment, and equipment for flammable and hazardous gases and liquids, ensures compliance with pertinent codes and city ordinances, approved plans, specifications and accepted methods and standards of work; and examines plans for compliance with pertinent codes, laws and ordinances for the approval of applications for permits.
Examples of Duties
+ Inspect and test boilers, air tanks , and other pressure vessels for leaks.
+ Examine boiler and pressure vessel components for adverse conditions.
+ Calculate the strength of boiler and pressure vessel components.
+ Inspect boiler and pressure vessel appurtenances.
+ Ensure that steam plant personnel are properly licensed.
+ Inspect flammable and hazardous gases and liquids installation.
+ Assist in the examination of applicant credentials for Boiler Operator and Stationary Engineer licenses.
+ Investigate complaints of violations of codes and prepares notices of violations.
+ Perform re-inspection of equipment to determine corrections of code violations.
+ Compile information and prepare code violation cases for court.
+ Appear and testify regarding code violations in court cases
+ Investigate and report on accidents involving equipment pertinent to the jurisdiction of the class title.
+ Prepare daily activities reports.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications (required):
+ High School graduation or GED . Advanced training in mechanical engineering principles and their practical application to the field of boilers and pressure vessels attained through a recognized institute of higher education.
+ Two years of experience in the operation, construction , or maintenance of boilers and pressure vessels .
Qualifications (preferred):
+ Experience in the inspection and/or supervisory phases of the work .
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:
+ Employees in this class will be required to provide and operate a motor vehicle on a reimbursed mileage basis; a valid State of Michigan Operator License is required.
+ Employees certified or promoted to this class must acquire and maintain certification of competency issued by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors within one (1) year / twelve (12) months of hire.
+ Progress toward obtaining certification will be evaluated at the end of the initial six-month probation period with a conditional six-month extension possible, after which, failure to comply will result in termination of employment in this class.

Physical Demands
+ Work involves climbing ladders and entering standard 10" x 16" and 11" x 15" boiler manholes, other narrow openings and crawl spaces, and moving along narrow, exposed platforms and beams.
+ Must be able to work in high and/or confined spaces.
Work Environment
+ Work is performed in uncomfortable climatic conditions with exposure to offensive odors.
+ Must be able to work in high and / or confined spaces.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
- At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
- At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
- An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
