The Vice President of Public Affairs leads the development and communication of the organization’s public affairs activities to benefit AAA members and business operations, including state level government and community relations, road safety and safe mobility advocacy, and community programs. This role also directs the organization’s external and internal communication teams, and serves as the publisher of Via, our print, digital and audio magazine for AAA members.
RESPONSIBILITIES / JOB DUTIES
+ .Government Relations & Regulatory Affairs
+ Develop and execute strategies to influence public policy related to all business lines.
+ Represent the company in legislative and regulatory discussions at local, state, and federal levels.
+ Build relationships with policymakers, industry groups, and regulatory agencies to advocate for favorable policies.
+ Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments impacting the business.
+ Corporate Communications & Public Relations
+ Lead the company’s external communications strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals.
+ Serve as the company’s spokesperson, managing media relations and crisis communication.
+ Oversee press releases, public statements, and messaging to maintain brand integrity.
+ Develop thought leadership initiatives and executive positioning in industry conversations.
+ Foster member support and affinity for AAA products, services and expertise through Via magazine, which serves to enhance member value.
+ Reputation & Crisis Management
+ Anticipate potential reputational risks and develop proactive crisis response strategies.
+ Manage public perception of all company products.
+ Coordinate cross-functional teams to handle crisis situations effectively.
+ Stakeholder Engagement & Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
+ Build and maintain relationships with industry associations, advocacy groups, and community leaders.
+ Oversee sustainability and corporate responsibility initiatives that align with company values.
+ Develop programs that promote road safety, responsible insurance practices, and community engagement.
+ Internal & Executive Communications
+ Collaborate with leadership to align public affairs strategies with corporate objectives.
+ Support internal communications to ensure employees are informed about company initiatives and external affairs.
+ Team Management
+ Oversee the public affairs and government relations team, providing guidance, setting objectives, and evaluating performance.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
+ Extensive experience in public affairs and/or communications with a proven track record of leadership and business success.
+ Superior interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels. Strong media skills preferred.
+ Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
+ Highly collaborative individual, with proven ability to work cross-functionally.
+ Must possess a blend of strategic “big picture” thinking with an eye for implementation and attention to detail.
+ Skilled at diplomacy, relationship management, advocacy and dealing with the media. Effective and persuasive in dealing with employees, senior management and Board of Directors.
+ Working knowledge of a federation governance model is a plus.

EDUCATION, COMPETENCIES, CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
+ Minimum Requirements:
+ Bachelor's degree in related area plus 10+ years in a senior business management role, demonstrating leadership in guiding strategic initiatives with a forward-thinking approach.
+ 15+ years of expertise and knowledge in public policy, communications, social impact, and/or a related field.
