Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Industrial Design, in the College of Design at Iowa State University (ISU), invites applications for a term faculty appointment at the rank of Lecturer, Assistant Professor of Practice, and/or Assistant Teaching Professor. The department is seeking to fill one full-time position; however, we are open to considering alternative staffing arrangements. This position may be filled as a single full-time appointment or as multiple part-time appointments, depending on the skills, availability, and interest of qualified candidates. The initial appointment for this position is anticipated to begin August 16, 2025, and the initial length of the appointment will be determined by departmental needs, but will not exceed an initial appointment length of one academic year (May 15, 2026), with the possibility of renewal.
Design faculty members are designated educators who support the comprehensive mix of accredited and nationally ranked degree programs within the College of Design. Our faculty help educate our students to become successful designers, planners, artists, and scholars who enhance human experience and improve the natural, social, and built environments.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate level courses in Industrial Design. Courses may include, but are not limited to, industrial design studios, design strategy, disruptive innovation, design thinking, design methods, design history, visualization and sketching, and Computer Aided Design. An ideal candidate will have experience in studio based teaching pedagogy and how it relates to the profession of industrial design. Managing studio projects and lecture courses is the primary responsibility.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
+ Lecturer rank: Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, or equivalent professional degree in a related field.
+ Assistant Teaching Professor rank: Terminal degree such as Master of Industrial Design, Master of Fine Arts or PhD in a related field.
+ Assistant Professor of Practice rank: Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design and 5 years of industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Terminal degree in Industrial Design.
+ Documented teaching experience in a design studio environment
+ Experience with online instruction
+ Professional experience in Industrial Design or a related field
Department/Program & College Description: Industrial design results in products, systems or services that meet a specified commercial objective. The discipline requires human sensitivity, artistic sensibility, technical competence and business acumen.
Industrial designers help create the objects that people use everyday: toothbrushes, telephones, computers and cars. Whether developing simple products or complex systems, industrial designers are required to understand user needs, assess technical feasibility, and evaluate commercial viability.
Students are able to explore all levels of fidelity in model making and prototyping from traditional shaping tools like saws and sanders to more advanced visualization tools like laser cutting and rapid prototyping.
Degree programs include undergraduate Bachelor of Industrial Design (BID) and Master of Industrial Design (MID) degree programs are both accredited by National Association of Schools of Art & Design (NASAD).
