Description of Work
This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). About the Role
NCDOT’s Office of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Outreach Program educates the public and builds strategic alliances that support NCDOT’s commitment to creating an inclusive and diverse workforce through its engagement with HBCUs and minority serving institutions.
The program focuses on workforce development through recruitment, innovation, education, and engagement. These are components essential to achieve NCDOT’s mission of connecting people, products, and places safely and efficiently with customer focus, accountability and environmental sensitivity to enhance the economy and vitality of North Carolina.
As a multimodal transportation agency, the department manages the state’s highways, ferries, aviation, rail, public transit, and bicycle pedestrian paths. The HBCU Outreach program strengthens this development through the cultivation of diverse students and strategic alliances with HBCU/MSI.
Through outreach efforts, students and alumni of HBCU/MSI are provided the opportunity to work with NCDOT professionals as interns and fellows while the institutions can create innovative and cutting-edge research projects supporting transportation.
What Will You Do:
+ Create materials for internship and fellowship programs (flyers, invitations, presentations, reports).
+ Conduct basic research for potential external partnership sources and maintain database; support Office of HBCU Outreach initiatives.
+ Establish and maintain positive interagency relationships with state agencies, college and university partners, and various stakeholders to gather and share information and best practices.
+ Regularly discuss common goals and challenges with office.
+ Strategize with office to determine what resources are needed to identify and hire interns and fellows.
+ Attend career fairs, career events, community outreach events, agency events for recruitment and outreach initiatives.
+ Assist with HR and administrative functions such as onboarding documentation, offboarding documentation, inventory management, etc.
+ Collaborate and assist with internship, fellowship, mentorship, and K-12 initiatives.

+ Working knowledge of administrative and office techniques.
+ Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
+ Strong computer and organizational skills.
+ Ability to research, coordinate, organize, and present data.
+ Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
+ Strong interpersonal/ human relations skills and ability to work collaboratively with various partners.
+ Interest in working with college students and K-12 students.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office software to include Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
+ Authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship now or in the future.

Eligibility Requirements
+ Must possess bachelor’s degree from, or be currently enrolled in masters, or professional level program (e.g., Law School) at an accredited North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) earned between 2022 – 2025 Or be a current graduate or law school student.
+ Must provide proof of College or University attendance/graduation by attaching a transcript (official or unofficial)
