Description of Job:
Valent BioSciences’ biorational plant growth regulator and biostimulant portfolio provides solutions to help growers realize the full genetic potential of their crops and navigate yield-reducing environmental stresses. We are seeking a horticulture expert to strengthen our base business in tree fruits, nuts, and other high-value crops. The successful candidate will conduct laboratory, growth chamber, greenhouse, and field research studies in the area of horticulture to (a) identify and evaluate plant growth enhancing biochemicals and plant biostimulants and (b) support and extend uses of our existing plant growth regulator products to solve unmet needs in the field.
Principal Responsibilities:
• Provide scientific expertise in the area of high-value fruit, nut, and vegetable production with a focus on abiotic stress management and productivity enhancement.
• Conduct research studies in the area of plant physiology of fruit and nut trees and high-value vegetable and fruit crops, with a focus on enhancing crop productivity, crop stress management, and general crop management using biorational substances.
• Identify and develop new uses for existing plant growth regulator products.
• Develop a network of university- and other 3rd-party contacts that can serve as a pool of potential research collaborators for researching and developing plant growth enhancing products.
• Supervise and mentor direct report(s).
• Participate in cross-functional product development and product life-cycle management.
• Conduct all work in strict compliance with all applicable safety requirements, containment requirements, standard operating procedures and/or guidelines.
• Work both independently and with interdisciplinary research teams while maintaining a positive and collaborative environment
Experience:
• Strong background in horticulture and whole-plant physiology.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
• Significant hands-on research in laboratory, growth chamber, greenhouse, and field experimentation with high-value horticultural crops and associated production practices.
• Working familiarity with common laboratory equipment, phenotyping methods and associated data acquisition and processing.
• Demonstrated ability to conceive novel hypotheses regarding crop performance, and the ability to design protocols to effectively test hypotheses in the laboratory and the field.
• Demonstrated experience in experimental design, statistics and the use of computational platforms.
• Notable plant growth regulator and biostimulant experience a plus.
• Research experience in the imposition and quantification of abiotic stress.
• Strong organizational, project management, interpersonal, and communication skills. Post-doctoral experience with a strong publication record in a relevant field is a definite plus.

Education:
• Ph.D. degree in Horticulture, Plant Physiology, or related field or Masters degree in a scientific discipline with a minimum of 6 years of laboratory experience or a Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline with a minimum of 9 years of laboratory experience.
Travel:
• Domestic/international 5-15%

Base Salary: The estimated annual base salary for this position ranges from:
$95,400 to $124,000. Individual pay is based upon location, skills, experience, and other relevant factors.
Incentives: All full-time employees are eligible for an incentive program or profit-sharing program in addition to their base salary.
