    Commissioning & Startup Lead

     

    Compensation: $135,000 – $185,000/year (DOE) + Full Benefits

    Overview

    We are seeking a hands-on Commissioning & Startup Lead with strong operational knowledge and control systems expertise to support the successful startup of a large-scale wastewater treatment facility. This site-based role is key to ensuring seamless equipment testing, systems integration, and turnover to operations. Future projects may require relocation or extended travel.

     

    This position works closely with the Commissioning Manager and Startup leadership to execute critical commissioning phases for turnkey and design-build contracts, optimizing safety, quality, and performance outcomes.

    Key Responsibilities

    + Lead the development and execution of commissioning and startup strategies for plant systems and equipment.

    + Draft and manage detailed procedures for testing, cleaning, and startup of mechanical, electrical, and control systems.

    + Coordinate with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure alignment on commissioning timelines and expectations.

    + Deliver training and materials to plant operations personnel on process equipment functionality and control systems (PLC, SCADA).

    + Support resource planning and task allocation for commissioning field staff.

    + Monitor and maintain high HSE standards during all startup and testing activities.

    + Manage and organize documentation, including startup reports, as-built data, and input to O&M manuals.

    + Collaborate with design and construction teams to resolve startup issues and deliver valuable feedback for continuous improvement.

    + Stay current on emerging technologies and integrate new tools into the commissioning process as appropriate.

    + Build and maintain effective working relationships with project stakeholders at all levels.

    Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related technical discipline.

    + 5+ years of experience in commissioning, startup, and/or plant operations.

    + 2+ years of leadership experience in water/wastewater or relevant industrial construction environments.

    + Hands-on experience in facilities with 50 MGD+ treatment capacity preferred.

    + Strong familiarity with control systems, P&IDs, PLCs, SCADA, and I&C integration.

    + Proficient with asset management systems (e.g., Maximo) and technical documentation tools.

    + Experience reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and drawings.

    + Working knowledge of equipment maintenance practices and plant operations.

    + Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, Smartsheet, and SharePoint.
