Job Description

The School of Data Science at Old Dominion University invites applicants for a tenure track/tenured position (depending on experience) in Data Science to begin in Fall 2025 as part of a multi-position hiring initiative for Applications of Data Science, Engineering, and/or Physics to Particle Accelerators. This position is expected to be made at the rank of Assistant Professor, but an appointment at a higher level will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates. We seek faculty that will lead the development of data science/artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) theory and applications to the broad accelerator science areas including improving existing and future accelerators, particle colliders, and light sources for fundamental research and applications in industry and medicine.

The appointee will develop and maintain a vibrant, externally funded interdisciplinary research program in artificial intelligence AI/ML and data science with focused application area to accelerator science research topics, including inverse problems in accelerator design and development, control of complex systems, uncertainty quantification in accelerator science, digital twins of accelerators, data reduction and representation learning, learning in extremely high-dimensional data, and other closely related advanced AI/ML and data science areas. Collaboration with other faculty in the School of Data Science, Physics, Engineering, as well as data scientists and accelerator scientists at the nearby Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) is expected.

Other Responsibilities:

+ Teach undergraduate and graduate courses.

+ Advise graduate students.

+ Provide service to their department and the University.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications

A Ph.D. or equivalent in Data Science, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related field is required.

Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

Candidates applying for a senior faculty appointment (Associate Professor or Professor) must also have the following:

+ Academic records that merit a tenured appointment with one of the departments in the University.

+ A successful record in research and externally funded grants.

+ Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate clearly with internal and external constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications

Postdoctoral experience in Data Science, Machine Learning, AI or a related field, at an academic institution or one of the national labs and a strong publication record and/or experience with grant-funded research are preferred.

About the Department

As one of the three academic units in the Interdisciplinary Schools at Old Dominion University, the School of Data Science is a new initiative that focuses on educating students in the rapidly growing field of data science, conducting cutting-edge research and serving as a center of AI education and research in the University community. Since its establishment in spring 2023, the school has grown to include ten core faculty members and over 80 affiliated faculty members across the campus, with wide range of active research projects from bioinformatics, web science, survey data science to scientific machine learning, explainable AI and generative AI. Faculty of the School of Data Science actively collaborate with researchers from renowned facilities such as Jefferson Lab (sponsored by Department of Energy), NASA’s Langley Research Center, Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium ( HRBRC ), Brock Virginia Health Sciences ( VHS , formerly EVMS ), and ODU’s Office of Enterprise Research and Innovation ( OERI ).
