Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position serves as the Assistant Bureau Chief for the Division’s Bureau of Natural and Cultural Resources and reports to the Bureau Chief. The Bureau serves to guide management and conservation of natural and cultural resources per Ch. 258, F.S. and Ch. 62D-2, F.A.C across 175 state parks and trails through formation of functional operating guidelines, continual analysis of needs and accomplishments, on- going review of current science, and effective communication with state park staff. Bureau staff are experts in their respective fields. This position supervises four full-time employees (FTEs): natural resource section leader, cultural resource section leader, geographic information systems section leader and the Florida Conservation Corps coordinator. Position represents the Division as needed on many various resource related topics. The position is focused on day-to-day staff management. Interacts internally as needed with all levels of the Department and externally with representatives from various city, county, state, and federal agencies; environmental groups; and private organizations. Position is primarily administrative but does require on-going coordination with staff at field sites.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
+ state statutes related to contract initiation and management
+ a broad array of natural and/or cultural resource management issues
+ state governmental procedures
+ Microsoft Office products
Ability to:
+ manage large projects and maintain effective progress
+ effectively supervise staff as demonstrated in previous experience
+ work with multiple and often rapidly changing priorities
+ work with diverse interests related to natural and cultural resources
+ comfortably speak to large audiences
+ research and advise on complex environmental challenges
+ prepare and present to various internal and external groups
+ work on today’s natural and cultural resource challenges while preparing for those of tomorrow
+ work outdoors in Florida’s various climates and habitats
+ work with limited supervision and guidance
Minimum Qualifications:
+ 14 years of experience managing natural and/or cultural resources contracts and/or projects, 5 years of which was in a supervisory capacity.
+ A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
+ Ability to travel overnight.
+ Valid driver license.
Incumbent of this position, in accordance with sections 110.1127 and 435.04, F.S. and DEP directive 422 (Background Investigation), is required to successfully complete a background and fingerprint check.
