Job Description
As a member of the Michigan House Democratic Central Staff, Communications Advisors work collaboratively with the Communications and Policy teams and member offices to draft a variety of communications materials for legislative work, in-district events, media relations, and social media content. The person in this position will also work in tandem with the Caucus Spokesperson to assist in garnering press traction for members of the Democratic Caucus. Summary: We are hiring a Communications Advisor to join our team. In this position, you will generate communications materials, social media content, and provide press support for the members of the Michigan State House of Representatives and the Democratic Caucus. This is a mid-level position that requires in-person work in Lansing and working collaborating with our Comms Team. The role is dynamic with a lot of room to hone and grow skills in a fast-paced environment. Tasks include drafting and editing media releases, talking points, and social media posts; shopping opinion editorials; organizing press events; and communicating Representatives’ needs with the rest of the team.
Job Responsibilities:
+ Write and edit external content for a diverse group of Democratic House members, including media releases and statements, Q&A prep, talking points, and op-eds
+ Media and press outreach, in conjunction with the Caucus Spokesperson
+ Pitch and coordinate interviews for members with in-district outlets and the capitol press corps
+ Live and scheduled social media posts
+ Maintain, audit, and update press lists
+ Stay up to date with news cycles and political conversations at the state and national levels
+ Help Representatives communicate their legislative priorities
+ Assist in executing rapid response plans
+ Prepare members for interviews, media scrums, and other press opportunities
+ Brainstorm ideas and offer suggestions for content, press events, and releases
Required Education and Experience
Candidate Requirements:
+ Minimum of 1 to 3 years of communications, journalism, public relations, or equivalent professional writing experience
+ BA/MA degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Political Science or a related discipline preferred, or commensurate experience
+ Knowledge of current political events and Michigan Democrats’ platforms
+ Strong interpersonal skills
+ Strong critical thinking skills, out-of-the-box thinking, with a mind for politics
+ Organized, able to multitask, and work collaboratively
+ Reliable work ethic and self-motivated
+ Eager to learn and try new things
+ Able to follow specific directions and work independently or within a team
+ Comfortable asking questions, seeking additional guidance, bouncing ideas off others and incorporating constructive feedback
+ Able to meet deadlines and manage multiple, simultaneous projects at once

+ An ability to read people, read a room, and read a situation
+ An understanding of Democratic values and an ability to translate those values into persuasive narratives via various mediums

+ Able to craft, tailor, and deliver effective, on-point messaging
+ Highly motivated, detail oriented, strong problem-solving skills, and uses time effectively
+ Understands social media platforms and can adapt posts accordingly
+ Can quickly turn around content for time-sensitive media releases and posts
+ Can juggle multiple tasks based on their priority level and time-sensitivity
+ Seeks out ways to be helpful beyond assignments and offers suggestions or new ideas
+ Knowledge of A.P. formatting style

Benefits and Compensation:
+ This position is mid-level and will be a full-time salary (40 hours/week). Full-time salaried entry-level: $58,000 per year. In addition, the Michigan House of Representatives provides comprehensive benefits, with full-time salaried benefits which include but are not limited to:
+ Insurance — House employees receive medical, dental and vision insurance. The plans offered are some of the most comprehensive employer-sponsored plans in the area and are available at a low cost to employees.
+ Vacation Time — House employees receive 26 vacation days per year. With the exception of session days (typically around 100 days/year.)
+ Paid Holidays — House employees receive 12 paid holidays per year.
+ Employer-Matched 401(k) — Employees automatically receive a 4% 401(k) contribution from the House, plus the first 5% of employee contributions are matched. For example, an employee that opts to contribute 5% to their 401(k) will receive a 9% contribution from the House, subject to vesting requirements.
