Researchers at the New York University School of Global Public Health are seeking certified Peer Mentors who are living with HIV and are former cigarette smokers to provide peer support to individuals living with HIV who are quitting smoking as part of a grant-funded research study focused on helping HIV+ smokers to quit.
The Peer Mentor position requires approximately 5-15 hours per week and ranges from $18.00 - $20.00/hour. Flexibility in hours may be needed to work outside of regular work day hours to reach study participants by phone and virtually. This position requires some in-person attendance in an office setting. Training sessions will also be conducted in person. Peer Mentors must be located in the New York City area.
Responsibilities include:
+ Provide ongoing peer mentor counseling and support to participants in the study who are attempting to quit smoking following a semi-structured protocol.
+ Work with each assigned study participant to support efforts to quit smoking.
+ Accurately document study interactions with participants.
+ Conduct some outreach to participants.
+ Participate in Peer Mentor trainings for the study and refresher sessions as required.
+ Attend project staff and supervisory meetings as needed.
+ Perform other related duties as assigned
+ Must be a certified Peer living with HIV and a former cigarette smoker.
+ Experience working with HIV+ clients required.
+ Experience working with smokers preferred. Training on tobacco use and smoking cessation will also be provided.
+ At least one year of prior experience working as a Peer preferred.
+ The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, outstanding judgment and discretion, reliability and initiative.
