In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations. Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

    This role is designated as essential and requires incumbents to report to work onsite. Telecommuting is not available for this role.

    JOB PURPOSE:

    This job series describes positions in which the major responsibilities are a variety of plumbing and heating, ventilation, air conditioning maintenance duties performed at the journey level. Work may include any plumbing function as described in the Uniform Plumbing Code and Uniform Mechanical Code. Work is done on pipes of various materials, such as brass, steel, cast iron, copper, glass, or plastic, and of various sizes. In addition, plumber/HVAC technicians are expected to perform extensive preventive maintenance, as well as to provide emergency response actions when needed in all areas of responsibility.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • **Work under general supervision and perform maintenance tasks of substantial complexity in two or more trades**

    • **Work following prescribed procedures**

    • **Duties are assigned under the direction of a shop manager or lead and are performed with considerable independence**

    • **Work will be spot-checked during an assignment or upon its completion.**

    • **Employees may work alone, or as a member of a crew (with or without lead responsibility)**

    Plumbing:

    • **Assemble, install and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures for gas, water and sanitary lines, storm drains, toilets, sinks, boilers, heat exchangers valves, pumps, drinking fountains, water stills, water heaters etc.**

    • **Cut and thread pipe; bend pipe to required angle**

    • **Join pipe by use of flanges, fittings, solder, caulking, welding, epoxy cement and diversified materials**

    • **Perform maintenance on plumbing by replacing washers on leaky faucets, mending burst pipes and opening clogged drains**

    • **Detect malfunctions in plumbing systems, such as heating hot water, chilled water, process cooling water; shut systems down and makes repairs**

    • **Work on glass, plastic, copper, brass, steel and cast iron pipe varying in size**

    • **Repair and install cast iron pipe joints with bands or lead caulking**

    • **Install and repair gas lines**

    • **May do minor plumbing-related welding and brazing**

    • **Respond to quick response calls throughout campus using good judgment in accurately assessing problems**

    • **Perform preventive maintenance and repairs**

    HVAC:

    • **Under the direction of a lead or supervisor, perform skilled heating, ventilating, and air conditioning work at the journey level**

    • **Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair all types of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment**

    • **Work in a wide variety of environments, such as office, library, student residences, food preparation and storage, research, shops, and laboratories**

    • **Respond to quick response calls throughout campus using good judgment in accurately assessing problems**

    • **Perform preventive maintenance and repairs**

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Education & Experience:

    Journey level knowledge equivalent to four years of completion in an apprentice program or a combination of equivalent education and work experience. Four years of actual work in the plumber/HVAC trades.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • **Skilled in the use of the tools, equipment and methods of the trade.**

    • **Understanding complex troubleshooting and repair of plumbing, hydronic, steam systems**

    • **Knowledge of the physical properties of steam and condensate and the equipment used in maintaining these systems.**

    • **May be required to use respiratory equipment.**

    • **Thorough knowledge of all types of materials and processes of the trade**

    • **Ability to work from plans and specifications**

    • **Knowledge of all applicable codes of the trade**

    • **Respond to emergency calls nights, weekends, and holidays**

    • **Willing to work variable shifts at night or on weekends**

    • **Demonstrated strong communication skills (both verbal and written)**

    Certifications and Licenses:

    • **Must possess and maintain a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license.**

    • **Preferred: Possess a journeyman card in plumbing/HVAC or other recognized technical credential.**

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

    • **Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C license.**

    • **Must be able to work in confined spaces or in high elevations.**

    • **Constantly twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.**

    • **Frequently stand/walk, lift/carry/push/pull objects**

    • **Occasionally kneel/crawl, reach/work above shoulders, light/fine grasp tools**

    • **Rarely climb, perform seated work, lift/carry/pull/push objects greater than 40 pounds, perform desk based work, use a telephone, sort/file paperwork or part**

    • **Occasionally operate foot and/or hand controlled equipment**

    • **Operate special machinery, i.e. mechanical and hydro sewer equipment.**

    • **Ability to works on or uses boom lifts, scissor lifts, cranes and forklifts to perform duties.**

    • **Ability to work in confined spaces and work at elevated surfaces at heights over ten feet.**

    • **Ability to perform strenuous and repetitive work**

    • **Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.**

    • **Constantly stand/walk.**

    • **Possess visual acuity required to work with color coding**

    • **Occasionally use a lift to access devices**

    • **Ability to perform work outside in variable weather conditions**

    • **Ability to wear required appropriate uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).**

    • **Ability to work in hot and cold temperature extremes**

    • **Required to wear appropriate uniform and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)**

    • **May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including Holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions**

    The expected pay for this position is $52.67 (Step 1) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
