Job Description
The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) is dedicated to strengthening New York City’s vibrant cultural life by providing funding and support to New York City’s cultural community, including the 34 institutions that comprise the Cultural Institutions Group (CIG) and more than 1,000 non-profit cultural organizations that receive annual support. This constituency represents a diverse array of organizations - including performing arts groups, museums, theaters, zoos, botanical gardens, visual arts and film centers, community-based organizations, and arts education programs – that are central to the life of communities in every corner of New York City. DCLA also manages a significant portfolio of cultural capital projects; provides free donated materials and supplies for arts programs and arts educators through its Materials for the Arts program; provides capacity building and technical assistance support to cultural groups; and commissions works of permanent public art through the City’s Public Art Program.
NYC Create in Place is a new initiative that aims to support and preserve community-based cultural and creative spaces in New York City. Led by the Senior Policy Advisor for Creative Sector Strategy, the program provides case management, assistance with navigating resources, and advocacy for cultural organizations at risk of losing space or looking to expand or relocate. Mayor Adams and the Department of Cultural Affairs launched the program in December 2024 to bolster the city's economic recovery through support of its creative sectors.
Under the supervision of the Senior Policy Advisor for Creative Sector Strategy, the intern will provide support for the NYC Create in Place program as follows:
-Assist with intake of registrants seeking support with space issues
-Vet space registrations
-Coordinate briefings with other city agencies
-Assist with outreach to potential partners
-Assist with planning and producing programming including but not limited to webinars, convenings
-Create and/or edit briefing memos for meetings and events, remarks, agendas, correspondence, presentations and other communications
-Draft content for monthly agency newsletter to external stakeholders.
-Assist with special projects and other related duties as needed.
Preferred Skills:
Candidate must be enrolled in a graduate degree program in Arts or Entertainment, Economic Development, Urban Planning, or another related field.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
Proficiency in Airtable and Microsoft Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write in plain language for multiple audiences.
Ability to balance multiple concurrent assignments.
Solid interpersonal skills and ability to work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
Strong attention to detail.
Strong time management and organizational skills.
Interest in public policy.
Passion for creative sectors
