Duration: Calendar Year (this position follows a 12-month schedule)
Brief Description of Duties:
SUNY Morrisville is seeking an Instructional Support Assistant to support our School of Agriculture, Business, and Technology's Equine Science department. This position is a twelve-month tenure track position in the Western concentration of the Equine Science Department assisting with the day-to-day management of program horses and facility.
The individual will independently provide instruction of various Western riding and training labs, along with supervision of the summer internship program. This position works as a team member in the strategic planning process with other faculty and staff members that work in Equine Science Department.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
+ Instruct various Western riding labs and lectures
+ Areas may include, but are not limited to: Colt Handling/Starting, Western Horsemanship, Western Pleasure, Trail, Reining, and Ranch Riding
+ Mentor, assist, and provide oversight for student activities
+ Participate in barn duty (Farm Practicum) and chore coordination with faculty/staff
+ Ensure barn chores are completed in the absence of students, especially during school breaks and holidays
+ Provide leadership and support to the program and students during summer internships
+ Possibility of training and traveling with students to Western riding discipline shows
+ Collaborate with fellow faculty to further develop the Western Program and support integration with other Equine programs on campus
+ Assist with the daily care and maintenance of horses, basic veterinary care, and facility upkeep as needed
+ Apply sound equine management practices, demonstrating initiative and the ability to work collaboratively as a team member
+ Support record keeping and program budgeting efforts, including herd inventory, supply tracking, expenses, and travel
+ Collaborate with department members to establish long- and short-term goals for the Western Program, identifying strategies for improvement in operations, facilities, and equipment
+ Participate in campus outreach and recruitment efforts through community engagement with 4-H, local industry groups, clubs, and related organizations
This position offers an exciting opportunity for the following:

+ Potential to earn a CDL to operate equipment
+ Experience marketing, preparing and selling horses
+ Optional Extra Service through Athletics: Assistant Coach to the Western Riding Team. Teach team lessons, travel to IHSA Horse Shows, and become familiar with IHSA paperwork and rulebook.
The successful candidate should have demonstrated teaching experience in Western riding, training, and instruction. They must be comfortable working with group riding lessons of 10-12 students and possess strong instructional skills in basic riding maneuvers. The candidate should be able to teach a wide range of skills across areas such as colt starting, Western horsemanship, Western pleasure, reining, and ranch riding, accommodating students at all experience levels?from beginner to advanced riders.
An appreciation for technical education at both the Associate and Bachelor of Technology degree levels is essential.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in Equine Science, or closely related field.
+ 3+ years' experience in Equine Western industry.
+ Some teaching experience in Western riding, training, and/or instruction.
+ Must be willing to travel occasionally for shows and recruitment events.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Master's degree or a willingness to pursue to support continued growth and development (Tuition Reimbursement is available!).
+ Local, regional or national achievements.
+ Computer skills including Outlook email, Microsoft Word and Excel, Social Media Networking.
+ Experience operating farm equipment is a plus, including the ability or willingness to earn a CDL. Preferred experience includes operating tractors, skid steers, arena maintenance equipment (e.g., Kiser Drag), mowers, and manure spreaders.
Please note, this position requires the ability to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks and work in outdoor environments, including inclement weather, as needed.
