Assistant Director of Veteran Affairs and Student Leadership (HEOa)
POSITION DETAILS
Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Life and Veteran Services, the Assistant Director of Veteran Services is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing the administration of leadership education and diversity programs within the Office of Student Life. This role serves as a key liaison between the Assistant Director of Student Affairs and various departments within the division, ensuring effective communication, operational efficiency, and alignment with institutional goals.
The Assistant Director is expected to:
• Assist the Associate Director in collaborating with college departments to create and implement programs that promote Veteran student engagement, leadership development, and personal growth, ensuring alignment with college objectives and student needs.
• Under the Associate Director’s supervision provide strategic leadership in managing the Veteran Services Office, ensuring timely and accurate support for veteran students, including advising on educational benefits, transition support, and services that foster academic and personal success.
• Collaborate with the Financial Aid and Bursar Offices to ensure compliance with GI Bill® requirements, guaranteeing that veteran students receive their benefits in a timely manner and remain in good standing.
• Work closely with the Admissions Office to develop strategies that enhance the recruitment of new and transfer veteran students, contributing to enrollment growth.
• Collaborate with academic advisors to track veteran student progress, ensuring their retention and supporting their successful completion of degrees.
• Assist the Associate Director to build and maintain partnerships with veterans' organizations and external agencies to expand resources and services, facilitating a smooth transition into college life for veteran students.
• Serve as an advocate for veteran students, addressing their unique needs within the campus community and identifying opportunities for enhancing their college experience.
• Provide support to the Associate Director of Student Life and Veteran Services in the daily operations and leadership development programs of the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development.
• Supervise designated spaces for graduate and undergraduate students, while advising the Graduate Student Council, providing mentorship and guidance for student governance.
• Collaborate with Student Life staff to support the planning and execution of annual Summer Student Leadership Retreats, conferences, seminars, and workshops that enrich the experiences of veteran students and other student organizations.
• Assist in processing event applications for on-campus and off-campus activities organized by student organizations, ensuring compliance with college policies and regulations.
• Assist the Associate Director to assess program effectiveness by conducting statistical analyses of participant data, attendance, and engagement.
• Coordinate college-wide events such as Commencement, Convocation, and Orientation, contributing to the successful execution of these institutional milestones.
• Serve on college-wide committees, providing insights and expertise related to student life and veteran affairs.
• Organize and oversee evening and weekend events as required, supporting the broader mission of student life and leadership development.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must possess a deep understanding of student development and the critical role co-curricular programming plays in enhancing student learning. They should be able to provide leadership, service-learning opportunities, and veteran-specific programming, with a proven record of success in program development, management, and assessment. The successful candidate will be a proactive self-starter with the ability to take initiative, exercise sound judgment, and diplomatically resolve problems. They must be capable of working effectively with a diverse student body, including veteran students, and demonstrate a collaborative approach when engaging with staff, faculty, and various campus departments, such as Financial Aid, Bursar, Admissions, and Academic Advising. Strong organizational skills are essential, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple demands, and meet deadlines. Exceptional verbal, written, interpersonal communication, presentation, and networking skills are required. The ideal candidate will also have extensive experience in leadership training, providing regular development opportunities to staff and students, and will work collaboratively with academic departments and administrators to support veteran students through service learning and leadership initiatives.

- Researches and stays current on higher education programs, trends, and issues with student impact
- Produces workshops and materials to support student programs; manages on-line communities; develops on-line social networking activities, and develops and maintains multimedia content on program web sites
- Performs related duties as assigned.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary Range: $62,411 - $75,465. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
