The **Technician Associate; Non-Destructive Test & Inspection Services (NDT) r** eports to, assists, and supports the Supervisor in coordination and execution of Non-Destructive Test & Inspection activity of wind turbine blades (internal / external), composite & welded structures, bolted joints, and rotating equipment. Work with a decentralized team of individuals supporting North American operations and maintenance activities of wind farms and related facilities to assure safety, minimize budget variances, and maximize availability in accordance with Operations Mission Statement.
Role Responsibilities
+ Adhere to the Company’s values and behaviors as aspired by RWE and the RWE NA Operations Vision
+ Assure that all operation and maintenance activities are performed in a safe manner consistent with policies and procedures established for the wind farm site. This includes wearing essential safety equipment, including a personal fall arrest system, as well as identifying potential hazards on the job.
+ Support a team in performing Non-Destructive Test & Inspections on multiple turbine manufactures, including GE, Siemens, Vestas, Gamesa, Acciona, Nordex, and/or Mitsubishi. Inspections include:
+ Assist in mobilization of all testing equipment to site
+ Assist in transportation, setup and the operation of up-tower blade access mechanism
+ Assure proper storage, maintenance and handling of all tools and equipment
+ Ensure that all maintenance and repair activities are accurately recorded and documented to identify the failure history, mean time between failures and root causes
+ Travel 75%-100% throughout North America to service various RWE wind farm facilities
+ Perform safety and other wind farm related tasks when assigned and fill in as back up to personnel at other RWE sites when necessary
+ Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in order to operate company vehicle
+ Self-motivator; Ability to work successfully, safely and independently at remote wind farm locations
+ Complete time sheet and expense reports weekly
+ Assist in the producing records appropriate to inspection and test activities to assure legibility, completeness, and correctness of the information
+ Ensures that all documentation is accurately and neatly complete
+ Assist in filling out daily inspection reports and documentation as required
+ Perform all other duties assigned as may be required from time to time
Job Requirements and Experiences
+ Two (2) plus years of overall experience in operations and/or maintenance of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems. With at least one (1) of those years being in wind energy
+ Associate degree in Sciences or related field from an accredited school preferred
+ A 2 year or 4 year college degree from an accredited school, other than correspondence or on-line, in a technical hard science (engineering, physics, power, or closely similar) may substitute for 2 years of experience
+ A current journeyman or master electrician license may substitute for 2 years of experience
+ An A&P degree or analogous military training, along with a minimum of 2 years hands-on work experience may substitute for 2 years of experience
+ A wind technician certificate program can substitute for 1 year of experience
+ Training and course work related to composite materials inspection and repair will be a plus
+ Training and course work related to non-destructive testing & inspections will be a plus
+ Travel is required for majority of the time, with long and irregular work hours from time to time on various RWE and third party wind sites throughout the US
+ Further travel will be required to other conferences and business meetings as necessary
+ Demonstrates the ability to effectively enlist and energize stakeholders in a shared vision and to direct, align and inspire the actions of others in bringing about transformational change safety practices. Build strong and effective relationships with all stakeholders through two-way communications, personal leadership and commitment to the success of the organization
+ Promote safety for all at all times
+ Must be self-motivating and able to work with minimum supervision and make cost efficient decisions for all issues related to his/her discipline(s) with limited information and specific directions
+ Strong knowledge and understanding of turbine functionality on its composites, electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems, to ensure cost effective operation. High standards of integrity, honor, ethics, safety, productivity and attention to details
+ Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical system failures, understand, execute and communicate root causes and implement solutions to resolve issues
+ Willing and available to travel, must be able to make the necessary adjustments to the plans to respond to changing conditions, i.e. energy markets, project schedules, supply chain and energetic availability
Physical Requirements
+ Pass physical fitness tests required to maintain Global Wind Organization Certification
+ Lift, carry, and transport essential equipment, tools, and materials to job site
+ Climb wind towers and access wind turbines to perform non-destructive testing and inspections
+ Must be able to maintain a personal weight limitation of 270 lbs.
+ Must be able to sit, walk or stand for long duration of time
+ Must be able to climb wind towers daily. During this task, employee must be able to open/close hatch doors and identify potential safety hazards
+ Must have the ability to identify and distinguish colors
+ Must be able to transfer fifty (50) pounds from a thirty-five-inch platform to the floor
+ Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds for up to fifteen (15) feet
+ Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds from ground to brow height
+ Must be able to lift and transfer up to fifty (50) pounds to a thirty-five (35) inch platform
+ Must be able to lift and carry twenty-five (25) pounds with one hand up to fifteen (15) feet
+ Must be able to crouch, kneel, or ½ kneel for up to five (5) minutes at a time to perform maintenance tasks in low areas
+ Must be able to perform fine motor tasks, such as screwing or unscrewing nuts and bolts, while reaching around and over objects
+ Must be able to balance to: (1) work in closed and small swaying areas on top of and within wind towers, and (2) walk across small surface areas to access areas within wind turbines
+ Must be able to military, belly, or back crawl up to fifteen (15) feet to access the nose cone area of wind turbines
+ Must be able to step or climb up onto platform at a height of thirty-five (35) inches, with or without support
