The Department of Emergency Medicine of the MetroHealth System, a principal teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, is seeking APP to join our growing team at our Life Flight team.
Delivers direct patient care consistent with the advanced practice registered nurse’s education, experience and certification, in collaboration with a physician, which includes diagnosis, management and/or referral of health care issues. Promotes consumer, family, and community health through preventative health care actions and through patient advocacy. The advanced practice registered nurse may also manage complex illnesses and/or deliver specialty care. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System. Metro Life Flight: Responsible for advanced emergency and critical care patient management during air and ground transport of the critically ill or injured patient from the scene or outlying sites to participating secondary and tertiary care institutions. Provides intensive care monitoring, critical care intervention and advanced surgical skill procedures to critically ill and injured patients. This includes the management of high-risk obstetrical, medical, surgical, respiratory and cardiovascular patients. The specialized training of the Flight Nurse Practitioner allows for the provision of care to critically ill and injured patients through the use of ventilatory support, continuous cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring, including intra-aortic balloon pump. Responsibilities: Contributes to patient safety by: a. Providing a safe environment for patients. b. Reporting safety concerns, errors and near misses. c. Participating in system improvement initiatives to prevent errors. d. Providing evidence-based care as applicable to the role.
1. Clinical Practice
a. Performs patient assessment, documents and analyzes data relative to specialty based on patient needs, existing signs and symptoms and current patient data.
b. Utilizes critical thinking in formulating differential diagnosis and establishing priorities in care.
c. Institutes measures to promote and maintain health, prevent illness, maintain comfort and meet achievable patient and family care preferences.
d. Develops individual, evidence-based plan of care for patient with ongoing management and evaluation of patient outcomes based upon advanced practitioner’s scope of practice and certification in collaboration with patient, family, and/or other pertinent health care provider(s) including collaborating and specialty physician(s) as needed.
e. Provides care in a manner which enhances patient satisfaction; maintains and promotes good public relations.
f. Selects appropriate communication approach to achieve desired outcomes; identifies barriers to communication; initiates appropriate interaction and evaluates results.
g. Accepts accountability for clinical practice including making decisions proactively, responding to changing needs of patients/families and representing patient needs to others as appropriate.
h. Ensures that compliance is maintained with all applicable regulatory agencies and laws, national standards, The MetroHealth System Code of Ethical Conduct and American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics.
i. Prescribes drugs and therapeutic devices in accordance with laws and within scope of practice, if holds Certificate to Prescribe. For Clinical Practice of the Metro Life Flight Nurse Practitioner:
j. Understands flight physiology and takes appropriate action regarding patient care.
k. Works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager, Metro Life Flight Professional Practice Committee (Shared Governance) and assistant medical directors in the evaluation and improvement of clinical practice.
l. Assures availability via provided hospital pager for programmatic needs including but not limited to: patient care, specialty transports, and other administrative direction.
m. Performs a prehospital scene survey to ensure safety of patient and crewmembers and coordinates patient triage in the pre-hospital environment as needed.
n. Evaluates the care of patients within the scope of flight nurse practitioner utilizing Metro Life Flight protocols/guidelines and physician collaboration and consultation.
o. Maintains current knowledge of transport medicine standards and responsibilities.
p. Attends a minimum of 60% of scheduled staff meetings and documents meeting minutes have been read if not in attendance.
q. Attends a minimum of 50% case review conferences.
r. Attends minimum of two surgical skills lab a year.
s. Attends Operating Room or clinical experience if privilege requirements have not been met.
t. Perform techniques and medical procedures, via human patient simulators, as required to maintain skill levels.
u. Meets all clinical practice, safety, customer service and flight operations needs set forth by the administration of Metro Life Flight and The MetroHealth System.
2. Coordination of Care a. Consults with other professionals for joint problem solving and setting of mutual goals related to patient care issues when necessary. b. Functions as a resource for other nurses and healthcare providers for clinical practice issues and provides education as needed. c. Plans for continuity of care, identifies community health resources, guides patients and families in their use, and facilitates continuity of care on transfers as needed acting as liaison between patient/family/physician/community resources as needed.
3. Leadership/Organizational Skills a. Participates in achieving division/department goals; communicates division/department-based issues and concerns in an appropriate forum. b. Participates or supports advance practice registered nursing initiatives in The MetroHealth System. c. Participates as assigned in the orientation of new staff and serves as a resource and/or preceptor for students from various disciplines, and new personnel as well as other disciplines as appropriate. d. Serves on committees and/or participates in professional activities within the department, institution and/or community. e. Presents formal educational programs. For Life Flight Nurse Practitioner: required to present or teach a minimum of two (2) medical educational programs per year to a hospital or EMS/Community organization.
4. Professional Development a. Remains current with evidence based practice, adhering to national standards and ANA Code of Ethics. b. Identifies own learning needs. Sets learning goals, and actively pursues required knowledge and skills. c. Evaluates own professional practice utilizing self, collaborative physician, and peer evaluations according to state law. Includes patient and /or family feedback. d. Participates in performance improvement activities focusing on improving patient care outcomes. e. Participates in the identification of research projects; evaluates and analyzes research that is available in the literature for possible integration into daily practice in support of evidence-based practice.
Qualifications: Required: MSN or grandfathered under Ohio Revised Code Graduate of an accredited advanced practice registered nurse program Current registered nurse licensure in the state of Ohio Certificate of Authority as an Advanced Practice Nurse from the Ohio Board of Nursing Certification as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in specialty. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association or obtains within 90 days of hire. Obtains other advanced life support certifications applicable to practice area within 180 days of hire Meets the requirements/qualifications for clinical privileges in the specialty/department with The MetroHealth System and must report to Medical Staff Office at time of hire to apply for clinical privileges Maintains a standard care arrangement and renews/signs it as required by the Ohio Board of Nursing
