Job Summary
Incumbent will perform oral hygiene services to the general beneficiary population. Responsible to plan, coordinate, and participate in local health fairs and entire school district dental awareness events.
Will clean teeth and examine oral areas, head, and neck for signs of oral disease. Educates patient with age specific oral health care preventive methods. Assists with Dental Assistant Trainee orientation and training.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
• Cleans calcareous deposit, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums using dental instruments.
• Examines gums using probes to locate periodontal recessed gums and signs of gum disease.
• Feel lymph nodes under patients chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate the presence of oral cancer.
• Applies fluoride or other cavity preventing agents to arrest dental decay.
• Operates dental x-ray equipment to take intra and extra-oral radiographs.
• Educates patient on oral hygiene and provides personal teeth cleaning gift bag.
• Instructs patient in brushing / flossing techniques and care of prosthodontics appliances.
• Records and reviews patient medical histories.
• Charts conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist.
• Records information relayed by the dentist on prescriptions and other forms for dentist signature.
• Schedules follow-up appointment(s) as necessary.
• Maintains dental equipment in a clean and operative condition.
• Sterilizes instruments, materials and equipment and prepares surgical trays.
• Properly stores and maintains adequate supply levels.
• Welcomes and provides information to visitors, vendors, and tribal members either in person, phone, or social media.
• Assists and follows up with patients regarding the Dolly Jensen Fund eligibility information and approval process.
• Promotes local “preventative dental care education clubs”
• Sends reminder to patients to schedule preventative care appointment.
• Completes reminder call one day prior to scheduled appointment.
• Adheres to rescheduling appointment protocol.
• Attends and participates in appropriate administrative committee meetings.
• Teamwork’s with other administrative staff in preparation, participation, and closure of public meetings.
• Other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
• Graduate of accredited two-year Dental Hygiene Program required.
• New graduate with six months’ probation training on-site.
• Proof of valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)
• Bachelor degree preferred.
• Permanent, full unrestricted Dental Hygienist professional license
• Two years’ Dental Hygienist experience preferred
• Experience in community clinic preferred and a strong commitment to multi-disciplinary teamwork.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of general principles of dentistry and advanced knowledge of dental hygiene.
• Knowledgeable and proficient in dental terminology and procedures.
• Skilled in administering dental x-rays.
• Skilled and proficient with dental, scheduling, office and other software.
• Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.
• Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.
• Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).
• Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently as well as with teams.

Conditions of Hire
• May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license or capable of obtaining one, as well as be insurable by KIC’s company insurance.
